Vehicle Description
1987 Cadillac Brougham D'Elegance
Originally used for a single horse drawn enclosed carriage for 2-4
people, the "Brougham" owes its name to British statesman, Henry
Brougham. Cadillac first used the name in 1916 to designate an
enclosed 5-7 passenger sedan body style. In the thirties, the name
was given to a formal body style with open chauffeur compartment
and enclosed rear quarters, metal roof and often "razor-edged"
styling.
For consignment a 1987 Cadillac Brougham D'Elegance in black and
chrome looking good overall. The D'Elegance package includes extra
amenities like button tufted leather seating, and rear seat reading
lamps to name a few. Low mileage (49,508 confirmed to be original
miles) and all is well. Fair paint, clean black vinyl top, and
finely preserved interior with a 307ci V8, and you should go grab
Jeeves and we will go for a spin through town.
Exterior
Bathed in black, straight steel panels with nicely molded gaps form
to create this square and rectangle design exterior. Paint shows
some scratches, areas of orange peel, and general fading and some
battle scars. Neoprene bumper fillers have dulled in front and rear
behind the bumpers. Chrome remains nice as do all the exterior
trimmings. This Brougham wears a cross-hatch grille in 1987 and
1988 which was an identical re-cast of the 1981 grille. Dual
horizontal lined up headlights are on either side, and a wide
trimming is around the egg crate, and in an outward "V" format.
These front trimmings are all in superior shape and condition. The
black vinyl top appears well preserved with no rust underneath, and
nice fade free material with plenty of padding underneath. For the
back of the car, vertically oriented taillights are within large
styled chrome bezels, and a long clean bumper is below. Shades of
yore models for these taillights, nice Caddy crest badging, and
some red accent pinstriping have this cruiser all buttoned up and
looking overall very nice. Add some accenting wire chromed wheels
all around and you too can be puttin' on the ritz.
Interior
As the chauffeur swings open the door for our entry, we are greeted
with wide door panels that have plenty of padding under black
leather coverings. Chrome trimmings separate some of these panels,
and for the armrest/door pull, wood applique and chrome mix to make
the housing for the power windows, locks, seats and mirrors.
Elegance in a script style type font is embroidered with these
doors as well. Slipping inside we rest upon tufted and buttoned
leather wide seating with a split back bench upfront, and a large
bench with lots-O-leg room in the back. Seats are beautifully aged
and show some slight creasing of the leather, but it definitely
adds character because they are not perfect, just nicely aged.
Plenty of wood applique for the dash front, particularly in front
of the driver and passenger's sides with the gauge cluster in front
of the driver, and glovebox the passenger. A central main control
panel is where the climate controls and radio (AM/FM/Cassette) are.
Black carpeting in good condition floods the floors, and a tight
black headliner is above.
Drivetrain
Under the long hood is a 307ci V8, in original's condition, with no
corrosion and very little dirt, even dust (god forbid!) to speak
of. It is topped with a single 4-barrel carburetor and has a 200R4
transmission in 4-speed automatic configuration on the back.
Consigner stateds this transmission has been recently rebuilt. A
10-bolt 2.73 gear rear axle slides this long car smoothly down the
road.
Undercarriage
A nicely preserved undercarriage with no rust and solid unibody
construction is noted. As are independent coil springs upfront, and
a 4 link with coil springs on the back. Power disc brakes are
reserved for the front, and power drums for the rear. Looking good
on the preservation front, underneath.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and off to the cruise test track for a drive. This
car does so wonderfully, with smooth acceleration, bias free panic
stopping, and good solid cornering. All comforts were working just
fine, and with all the convenience options on this car that is a
good thing.
Fairly low miles, a square and rectangle classic, long, big body
panels and an extra padded interior in black leather, and you are
in chauffeur driver heaven. Go ahead live a little.
