Vehicle Description
1975 Stutz Blackhawk VI
The Stutz Motor Car Company was an American producer of high-end
sports and luxury cars based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Production
began in 1911 and ended in 1935. The brand reappeared in 1968 under
the aegis of Stutz Motor Car of America, Inc., and with a newly
defined with a modern retro look. Although the company is still
technically in existence, sales of factory produced vehicles ceased
in 1995. Throughout its history, Stutz was known as a producer of
fast cars (America's first sports car) and, from 1924, luxury cars
for the rich and famous.
Johnnie Harrison Taylor, (May 5, 1934 - May 31, 2000),was a
three-time Grammy nominated American recording artist and
songwriter who performed a wide variety of genres, from blues,
rhythm and blues, soul and gospel to pop, doo-wop, and disco.
Johnnie Taylor's singing then was strikingly close to that of Sam
Cooke, and he was hired to take Cooke's place in the latter's
gospel group, the Soul stirrers, in 1957.
At this point you are surely pondering how the factoids above are
tied to our beloved Classic Auto Mall. Simply put, we present to
you, a 1975 Stutz Blackhawk VI originally owned by the late Johnnie
Taylor and sold to our consignor by Mr. Taylor's late wife, Gerlean
Rockett Taylor. Talk about prominence, The Philosopher Of Soul
drove this luxury car, that oozes excess from body gaps to shiny
chrome.
Exterior
Bathed in gold and dark brown, that is separated by a thin chrome
strip that runs on a slight angle downward from the batwing style
fenders then up an over the rear wheel arch and slightly downward
again to the rear bumper. The long sleek hood ends at a chrome
Mercedes Benz style grill that is flanked on both sides by large
round headlight and smaller round marker lights. Faux chrome side
pipes run the length of the car beginning mid front fender and
ending in front of the rear tire. Chrome wire spike wheels with
gold plated 3 spoke spinners grace each corner and a matching spare
wheel tire combo is mounted out in the open on the rear. Steal Away
indeed!
Interior
A swing of the massive door are we are greeted with bark tanned
leather by Connolly Bros. of London, walnut wood backing and New
Zealand lamb's wool carpet. All controls on the doors are plated in
24k gold. More Connolly Bros. leather covers the rear bench seat
and both front buckets. All surfaces show in very good condition, a
display of the fine quality materials used. A Nardi wood rimmed,
gold plated 3 spoke steering wheel fronts a bevy of round gauges to
monitor all engine functions. A central console runs the length of
the interior and includes holders for a large bottles and a few
small glasses. A floor shifter protrudes from the console for gear
selection and is topped by a clock, HVAC controls, and an AM/FM
quadraphonic radio with an 8 track player. More walnut covers the
overly padded dash and is fronted on the passenger side with an
ownership plaque. A headliner made from fine Italian wool with a
centrally located power sunroof and New Zealand lamb's wool carpet
coats the floor. I Found A Love for sure!
Drivetrain
All Pontiac power resides under the massive hood, 455ci V8 making
200hp of it to be exact. Topped with a 4bbl carburetor, power
steering, and air conditioning. Power brakes and an air horn are
also noted. A TH400 3-speed automatic send power back to a 10 bolt
Safe-T-Track rear axle. Try Me Tonight!!
Undercarriage
A rust-free frame, floor pans, and suspension all present well.
Seepage from the rear axle and transmission pan are noted.
Independent coil spring front suspension with power disc brakes and
a 4 link coil spring suspension with power drums bring up the rear.
Single exhaust with a stock style muffler expels used fossils and
air. Also, a new fuel tank is seen. Take Care of Your Homework!
Drive-ability
A twist of the key and the engine roared to life. Off to the test
track with the sound of blues softly playing over the stereo.
Acceleration was good and bias free braking was noted. All
functions were working during my drive. I resisted the urge to take
my loafers off and run my piggies thru the lamb's wool carpet.
Overall a flashback with luxury, very relaxing and stylish. Too
