Vehicle Description
1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk. This is an older restoration with some
bondo patching in the fenders and fiberglass on the front floor
pans. It has a good grille and hubcaps. It was changed to a 3 Speed
OD with floor shifter, console and bucket seats. There is a switch
on the console next to the shifter for OD control. This car had
front end damage and will require repair or replacement of LF
fender, LF air scoop & trim and hood. I purchased this care with
plans to get this car running as a driving restoration. So far,
this is the work I have done on the car: Rebuilt carburetor Rebuilt
fuel pump New plugs & points New exhaust elbow New heat riser valve
New master cylinder and all wheel cylinders, hoses & shoes. Oil
change with zinc additive I have been able to get the car running,
driving and stopping. After getting the engine running, I drove it
around the block a couple different times, but was still working on
tuning the carburetor. After running the engine for a longer period
to warm it up, it developed a knock around cylinders 1 or 3. I
added Seafoam to the oil, thinking it might be a sticky valve and
after running it for about 10 minutes, the knock went away! I then
went on to adjust the carburetor some more, but after about 10
minutes more the knock came back. After doing a compression check
on those cylinders, 3 has shown weak compression. I still suspect a
sticky valve, or weak valve spring. I removed the left bank valve
cover to inspect the valve train and found no obvious issues. The
knocking comes and goes while running, so I am fairly convinced it
is a sticky valve. I have done some straightening of the damaged
sheet metal, as seen in the photo. I believe it can be repaired
without replacing sheet metal. Please Note The Following **Vehicle
