Chassis number S674511, an original left-hand drive Open Two-Seater
Roadster, was completed on December 21, 1953 and dispatched to the
States on December 31st through Hoffman Motor Car Co. of New York,
wearing Pastel Green paint over Suede Green upholstery with a Fawn
top. The "S" chassis number prefix denotes an S.E. - Special
Equipment Model (known as XK120M "Modified" in the USA). Power was
rated at 180bhp using high-lift camshafts, a lightened flywheel,
special crankshaft damper, uprated valve springs, dual exhaust
system, stiffer torsion bars and rear springs. The addition of wire
wheels also proved to have an excellent impact on the car's overall
look.
It is believed the Roadster spent a majority of its life in New
York, while most recently acquired from over four decades of
ownership. S674511 presents as an honest, complete, very solid, and
thoughtfully maintained driver's Roadster. Upon close inspection,
the Jaguar retains many of its original components, while
displaying an older repaint in black lacquer. Body gaps are
consistent with good fit and finish throughout. remarkably solid
undercarriage has been recently steam cleaned and shows well.
Bright chrome wheels are shod with new, period correct 6.00-16
Pirelli Stella Bianca tires and complement the Lucas fog/driving
lamps fitted with protective mesh grills, Lucas PL Tri-bar
headlights, and vintage 1954 New York rear license plate.
The cabin displays beautifully mellowed leather seating and dash,
with slight traces of green color wearing though on the piping -
indicating the original Suede Green upholstery was dyed to its
current black. The seating remains supple and much like a
comfortably worn cigar chair. Correctly finished black carpeting
appears newer. Instruments, lighting, and safety equipment are in
proper working order. For open motoring, a full-cab, half-zip
tonneau covers the cabin, while a black canvas (small window) soft
top and matching side curtains (with custom vinyl carrier) protects
occupants.
Both front and rear compartments are tidy and correct in
appearances, the engine bay is fitted with its original brass
plaque, matching numbers engine block and head. The luggage
compartment comes fully stocked with the aforementioned weather
equipment, an original tool kit w/ many of the often missing bits,
grease gun, jacking rachet, jack, tire pump, hammer, spare wheel
assembly - along with period wind wings and JCNA grill badge, among
other items. Supporting it all is a solid undercarriage, which
appears to have been restored at one point in its life. Sturdy
wooden floors, black paintwork, and leather-wrapped leaf springs,
pair to excellent lateral structural supports, corner joints, and
other chassis components that do not often survive corrosion
well.
A Fall 2020 inspection, tune-up and scheduled service addressed new
Pirelli tires, batteries, ignition, and fuel components, along with
a flush of the fluids and filters. The Roadster starts with ease
and performs well on the open road. Upgraded Wilwood front disc
brakes and a stainless-steel exhaust system were installed by the
previous owner. The current recorded mileage of 79,530 is thought
to be original. A wonderfully honest example, from years of
thoughtful ownership, this complete and matching-numbers XK120M
Open Two-Seater Roadster offers many opportunities to its next
caretaker. Price to sell.
