Vehicle Description
1972 GMC Sprint Truck
The GMC Sprint is a coupe utility/pickup that was produced by GMC
for the 1971-1977 model years. The Sprint was renamed Caballero for
the 1978 model year and produced through 1987. The rear-wheel-drive
car-based pickups were sold by GMC Truck dealers primarily in the
United States and Canada as the GMC version of the Chevrolet El
Camino. Trim designations, emblems, and wheel trim differentiate
the GMC from the Chevrolet. The vehicles were built on the GM A
platform through 1981; for 1982, it was re-designated the G
platform as the A platform switched to front-wheel drive.
For consignment, an original 1 owner truck, low miles (50,104),
vinyl top and number 423 of 6,766 total units produced. Purchased
in late 1971 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, this truck is the
grocery getter version of the Sprint with a mere 149 produced with
the 250ci 6 cylinder engine. A rare bird indeed, available for the
plucking right out of our Classic Auto Mall hallowed halls.
Exterior
The beneficiary of a respray in War Bonnet Yellow 18 years ago, it
still retains its shine. Prior to painting, a new drivers side rear
floor was replaced, and the driver's side rear quarter panel and
right rear wheel arch were welded and blended in. Now no rust is
seen on this vehicle, and dimple free steel with straight well
minded gaps abound throughout. A black vinyl top is the original
and remains fade free and underlying rust free. Two longer flying B
pillar buttresses angle rearward to the sides of the bed, which is
covered with a black vinyl tonneau, also in excellent condition.
Underneath if we peek inside the bed, it is seldom used, nary even
a scratch on this total steel box bed. Standard body matching steel
wheels with the basic wheel covers are on all 4 corners which sport
thin white sidewall tires. Consigner states the original spare from
the factory is on board.
Interior
Very simple, very effective, and very original, we see black panels
for the doors with just a hint wood applique, shiny knobs and
cranks, and all clean and nice door panels. A split bench stretches
from door panel to door panel and is nearly new looking all in
black vinyl. The factory dash, factory instruments and factory
steering wheel are also inside, and all surfaces have been well
cared for over time. Clean black vinyl floods the floors, and a
tight black headliner is above this 1-seater possible 3 passenger
truck posing as a car.
Drivetrain
Opening the hood, and a thing of mechanical beauty exists, in the
form of an orange block, intake manifold, and valve cover 250ci
inline 6-cylinder that looks like it just drove off the showroom
floor up in Punxsutawney. Supple hoses, no corrosion, and certainly
no rust are seen anywhere in this engine bay. A 1 barrel carburetor
is atop and covered by a nearly perfect black air cleaner covering.
On the back is a 2-speed Powerglide transmission, with a 10-bolt
3.36 rear axle. Just a beautiful performance under this hood. Take
a bow!
Undercarriage
Some surface rust on the driveshaft, road dirt on the suspension,
but otherwise all solid steel rust free structure and floorpans.
Drum brake housings show a slight bit of surface rust and are on
all 4 corners. Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link
with coil springs for the back are on and accounted for. New wheel
cylinders, water pump and starter are now installed and working to
standards.
Drive-Ability
Consigner states this is a little old lady car, but by being so, it
is very rare. We hopped in and started her right up. It was off to
the test track where it was a pleasure to drive, smooth
acceleration that does get you up to highway speeds, smooth ride,
and nice handling. All functions were working as they should! Now
pay attention "Sonny!!!"
Number 423 of 6,766, and one of ONLY 149 with the 6-cylinder low
end optioned car. Plus, the vinyl top, nice respray, and an all
original interior, shiny and nice. Lest we forget the engine which
is truly a sight to behold in its original painted orange jacket
supple hoses and corrosion free bolt ons. Well? what are you
waiting for, someone will beat you to this rare bird if you do not
get with the program!
