Vehicle Description
1938 Oldsmobile Coupe
Olds' invention inspired a 1905 song, "In My Merry Oldsmobile,"
whose chorus includes the lines: "Come away with me, Lucille/In my
merry Oldsmobile/Down the road of life we'll fly/Automobubbling,
you and I.". However, by 1904, clashes between Olds and his
investors caused him to sell the bulk of his stock and leave the
company. He soon went on to found the REO (based on his initials)
Motor Car Company, which built cars until 1936 and produced trucks
until 1975.
Custom is the word, bird, not bird! With this consignment of a 1939
Oldsmobile Coupe we see customization all over it. From its
fiberglass hood, shaved door handles , and bumpers, new billet
wheels and tires, custom tan leather interior, and 3 stage paint,
she's a looker and a cooker!
Exterior
Save for the fiberglass hood, this car remains all straight well
minded gapped steel, all bathed in 3 stage Brandywine Metallic
paint. The decision was made to go sans any chrome trimmings and it
works like a charm. Looking menacing but still grabbing your eye to
look all over this beautiful sculpted steel. The headlights and
signals are custom glass reproductions and lead the way flanked by
round bulbous fenders that create a rubberized running board
between the front and rear fenders. Polished 17-inch American
Racing billet style wheels are in all 4 corners and wrapped by
225/55R17's tires...Snazzy!
Interior
A swing of the doors and behold there is...more custom! Door panels
utilize a cream filled background and have an inset red curled NIKE
swoosh (if you will) that interacts with an embossed reversed
swoosh below. Inside dual bucket chairs stitched and overstuffed in
tan leather make up the seating for the front passengers. In back
is another couch overstuffed and draped in more tan leather, nicely
presenting. although tight back there. Upfront a leather wrapped
polished center steering wheel fronts a now totally custom dash.
Showing in two tone padded leather, cream topped and fronted, and a
red band below its peppered with polished aluminum panels for the
instrument cluster, and radio and climate sliders. White faced
gauges are inserted and allow the pilot to monitor all the
essentials. Floors are flooded with light brown carpeting, and in
the center is a custom molded console for the shift lever, and dual
cup holders. A tight cream headliner floats above all this
menagerie of customization, and all is looking good inside!
Drivetrain
Under that fiberglass hood is a sight to behold...pure bling with
all polished metal surfaces and those that are not polished are
chromed. Let's call it heavy metal! It's a 350ci crate V8 with a
350 turbo transmission backing it up. Shiny headers and a shiny
Flowmaster exhaust are now attached, and this engine bay just
gleams with bling. An Edelbrock (polished of course!) intake
manifold and carburetor are now atop. A 10-bolt rear is on back so
you can now spin the tires. Yowza!
Undercarriage
The sturdy X frame remains and is all painted and nice with no
rust, meaning no rust anywhere! All solid structural steel
underneath even the goody hangers are looking strong. A Mustang II
front end, power rack and pinion steering, and power disc brakes
now upfront and totally rebuilt. For the back, leaf springs and
drum brakes are on.
Drive-Ability
Not only does it look good it also performs in award winning style,
with a quick start, smooth idle (is it on... my trusty co-pilot?!)
and smooth acceleration that seems to never end. Great handling,
bias free braking, and an overall all working function comfortable
test drive.
A creative build, taking some liberties on the shaving parts front,
a bling engine bay, and beauty custom interior, this is now an REO
speed wagon! Put that pun in your pipe and smoke it!
