This 1978 Ford Mustang II is one of approximately 4,300 examples equipped with the King Cobra package, which added special trim, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, and a 302ci V8. It was sold new from Ray Whitfield Ford in Taylor, Michigan, reportedly to a Ford employee, whose family retained the car until 2016. The car is finished in Dark Midnight Blue over a tan interior and has been modified with a five-speed manual transmission. This King Cobra has factory literature, service records, a window sticker, a Deluxe Marti Report, and a clean Ohio title showing the mileage as "Actual." It was 35 degrees while filming the videos so that is not smoke coming from the exhaust just condensation from the cold.
The car was refinished in Dark Midnight Blue with orange stripes during previous ownership. The King Cobra package added a snake decal on the hood, King Cobra badging, and pinstriping around the side windows, decklid, wheel arches, and rockers. Other features include a rear lip spoiler, painted bumpers and mirror caps. The paint and decals are in great condition and the paint has a nice gloss and shine and is smooth to the touch. There is not rust anywhere around the car and no bubbling paint.
13″ lacy-spoke aluminum wheels feature orange accents and are fitted with brand new 205/60/15 BF Goodrich tires at each corner which have full tread left and less than 100 miles on them. The car was factory-equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes. The master cylinder was just replaced and the brakes stop and work like they should. New exhaust was just added and the car sounds great at idle and cruising speeds.
The cabin was refreshed in 2003 and features tan upholstery and a matching dash, door panels, and carpet. Interior equipment includes two rear seats, a brand new CD player with new speakers, a polished shift knob, a rear window defroster, floor mats, and manual wind-up windows. The rear hatch struts were just replaced and they work properly and hold up the hatch well.
The leather-wrapped sport steering wheel fronts a 6k-rpm tachometer, a speedometer, and aftermarket gauges for temperature and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 63k miles. The seat covers were replaced and are in like new condition. The carpet was replaced as was the rear hatch carpet and both are in like new condition.
The 302ci V8 sends power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission that was reportedly installed by the original owner in place of the factory four-speed manual gearbox. A new battery was just added. New spark plug wires were added along with a new distributor and msd box. A new Edelbrock Carb. was recently added with new fuel lines and fuel filter.
The window sticker shows initial delivery to Ray Whitfield Ford of Taylor, Michigan, and lists standard and optional equipment for a total price of $5,459. Factory literature and service records accompany the car and driving and walk-around videos are provided above.
