Vehicle Description
1985 Ford Mustang SVO
After weathering two fuel crises, Ford decided to try it's hand at
turbocharging to offer an alternative to the venerable 302 to those
who wanted something more efficient or a bit different - or by the
time the Mustang SVO debuted in 1984, to offer an American
alternative to those who had grown to like the sophisticated
foreign sports cars of the time (280ZX Turbo, RX7, Supra, Starion,
etc.). I'm getting ahead of myself, though. The SVO was not the
first turbo car that Ford of America popped out; it was just the
best one.
For consignment the Mustang's venture into fuel efficiency with
some extra power using a turbocharger. A low mileage example bought
by our consigner as an investment and to have some enjoyable
drives, all the while saving gas to boot! (15,196 original miles).
A very clean original paint, original interior car in Fox body form
right out of the square and rectangle design era of 1985. Gnarly,
and some big hair thrown in, and now you're savin' gas and goin
fast.
Exterior
SVO stands for Special Vehicle Operations department which was
created to breathe new life into the muscle car during the gas
crisis. This example is bathed in factory Silver Metallic, and has
black accenting. An off-center hood scoop, for the turbo in front,
and on back dual molded plastic spoilers, dual exhaust and a
hatchback design. Paint and gaps are looking good in their original
form and overall finish has a retained shine. Headlights are clear,
and bumpers in their neoprene crash form are all good. 16-inch mag
wheels are all around and covered in their original 225/50ZR16's.
Cheeuh!!
Interior
Some gray broadcloth some gray vinyl and some gray carpeting
utilize multiple tones and textures to cover the door panels. Black
actuators and power window toggles are mounted on as well. Inside
matching light gray broadcloth with mini square patterning
throughout create the inserts to the high back buckets, and darker
gray broadcloth is reserved for the bolsters. All stitched with
white thread and they are in very nice condition, no soils or
faults as to tears etc. In the back 2 grabber 2 plus 2 buckets as a
bench stretches across the rear of the car. Gray carpeting covers
all the floors and looks just fine. A very clean molded center
vinyl console houses the shifter, fog lamp switch and fuel switch
for usage of premium gas, with a red LED digital clock. Just above
is an AM/FM/Cassette player with all the built-in controls for
sound mixing. The dash is a lighter charcoal textured vinyl and has
black faced gauges deeply inserted. A nice padded rally steering
wheel is fronting the dash. The fuzzy felted headliner is gray and
looks good! Just like butter...
Drivetrain
Under the hood, stuffed into a clean and well detailed engine bay
is an inline 4-cylinder turbocharged 2.3-liter EFI engine. This is
capable of producing 200hp. A T5 5-speed manual transmission is on
back and for the rear drive axle a Ford 8.8 inch pumpkin with 3.73
trac-loc gears. Phat to the max.
Undercarriage
Just like it drove out of the factory door, with virtually no road
dirt, or splashed seen underneath. Just solid unibody construction,
black shiny floorpans and rockers, and power disc brakes all
around...Word..
Drive-Ability
Our resident muscle car expert drove this example and reported a
surprising amount of power from the I-4 Turbo setup. It handled
nicely and has bias free panic stopping. All functions were working
nicely in this very clean interior and comfortable cruiser.
A investment car, bought, rarely used, but pampered for the future
which is now, this 1985 SVO fuel saver come muscle car resurrection
is available for the taking, and it will impress, as well as serve
to absolutely NOT gag you with a spoon! I'm going to bounce
now...
