Vehicle Description
2005 Cadillac XLR Roadster
Ready for one of the lesser-known Cadillac facts? Al Capone's
bulletproof 1928 Cadillac sedan became the first bulletproof
Presidential vehicle for Franklin D. Roosevelt on the evening of
the Pearl Harbor bombing. It had been impounded by the government
when Capone was sentenced to Alcatraz prison, and the Secret
Service decided to use it for the President.
This garage kept, rarely in rain car has been lovingly cared for by
its consignor and prior owner, but I digress: in actuality it
passed the last inspection with flying colors needing nothing. A
mere 41,118 miles are clocked on the odometer, and most of that was
put on driving back and forth to Florida. Some snazzy options and a
fold away hardtop this gem presents very nicely.
Exterior
Continuing in the aggressively straight and pointy design language,
and the nonsensical three letter naming scheme (that totally wasn't
a mimic of what the German and Japanese luxury manufacturers were
doing) the XLR looks like a pure blooded Caddy. It also loosely
picks up some design cues from the Corvette, which it was built
right next to, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This car has
hydro-formed perimeter frame construction and composite bodywork,
this example is bathed in Black paint and has a matching
retractable hardtop that folds down to form a convertible. From the
headlights to the taillights this car utilizes the gem cut theory
of design with plenty of sharp angles and flat surfaces. Panels are
all straight, and paint remains nicely preserved.
Interior
In typical Cadillac style, no expenses were spared on the
conveniences end. Bulgari designed instruments sit within a field
of Eucalyptus wood accents. A touch screen navigation is installed,
premium Bose sound system, and power windows, power memory seats,
steering wheel radio, voice command controls, and a sport mode with
driver shift controls. The large luxurious parchment colored
leather covered seats in bucket form are fitted into the passenger
compartment. The driver's seat shows some wear with folds in it.
These seats also have built in speakers. All this in beige with the
wood accents, and some black vinyl to finish it off.
Drivetrain
The 4.6 Liter Northstar V8 which is original to this car puts out
320 HP. It is electronically fuel injected and has a 5-speed 5L50E
automatic transmission on the back of it. 2.93 are the rear
gears.
Undercarriage
Simply beautifully preserved with all shiny parts and workings, and
very little sign of use during rainy weather. 4-wheel independent
suspension. and power disc brakes all around provide the ride and
stopping.
Drive-Ability
As expected this car starts right up and rides very nicely. It has
lots of surprising power, and corners well. It has a comfortable
interior and the convenience buttons will keep you occupied for a
long ride, let alone the touch screen navi.
A well cared for example, well maintained, garaged, and all working
example of Cadillac's venture (all be it lightly) into the luxury
sports car market with its straight and pointy gem cut design. The
retractable hardtop is a real convenience as well. A low mileage
nice car. Let's call it a real gem?!
