Vehicle Description
1987 MG TD London Replica
The London Roadster was conceived in Dearborn, Michigan, where it
was manufactured. The Roadster was designed to fill a desire held
by countless Americans for time on end. An American built open air
sports car of distinction. London Roadsters were built on both VW
and custom frames.
Offered for consignment a London company MG TD replica of a 1953
version of this model. Powered by a rear engine VW, and sitting on
a square steel tube stock chassis, it's a very nice looking example
of the '53 TD. All fiberglass body, nice paint, and of course no
rust to deal with, and a reliable VW 1600cc engine to push you
along on your tool through the windy roads ahead, offering up just
a cracking time mate!
Exterior
A view from the side shows the sexy curved lines produced by the
cowled hood front, rear hinged low profile doors, and beautifully
designed rear. On this body are the fender and running board
attachments which start up front just above the shiny bumper, and
curve lazily upward barely touching the chromed headlights that
flank the front chromed radiator surround and grille. At their
crescendo, a turn signal light is mounted on, then they begin their
slow approach to the running board which becomes level way
rearward, just below the suicide doors. We are preparing to go back
up again on the back fender where it takes a much more aggressive
ascent with its C curve, reaching its peak just below the rear
tonneau cover, then artfully heading downward to gracefully frame
the body rear trunk (hiding the VW engine) and rear mounted full
spare tire. At the bottom it greets the bumper which curves around
the bottom of the back of this car. These lovely fenders and
running board provide the framing for 15-inch chromed wire wheels
with solid center caps, and just a hint of the red brakes that
reside behind the wheels on all 4 corners. All this fiberglass body
sex is bathed in red and it is fairly deep. A white canvas
convertible top is available for the cooler drive times, and
operates flawlessly, although manually.
Interior
Those short doors swing rearward on their back hinges and reveal
red vinyl crafted with stitched panels and large pouch and screw
fastened to the interior of the doors. A red tuck and roll bench in
shiny vinyl stretches from door to door and is fronted by an
eyebrow curved wood dash. Here, instruments pepper the wood and
offer up important running data from the engine, as well as speed.
On the passenger side is a Sony AM/FM/Cassette player is neatly
mounted within the wood dash. Beautiful thick pile red carpet
floods the floors where we note the shifter and handbrake on the
hump in the center of the bench. A dash mounted mirror is in the
middle of the eyebrows, and a wood 3 spoked drilled chrome and wood
surrounded steering wheel presents itself to the driver on the left
hand side. Under the faux cowled hood is more red carpeted storage
space.
Drivetrain
Power comes from the rear in the form of a 1600cc VW engine, which
is looking nice and clean and well maintained. It is fed fossils by
a 1-barrel Solex carburetor and has a 4-speed manual transmission
on the back. Ferrari badged chromed tips cover 4 exhaust outlets,
which are stationed just below the rear bumper.
Undercarriage
Very simply put, simple! Framework is square stock steel tubing and
plenty of rust-free steel panels to cover the entire bottom of this
car. Up front Mustang II suspension is installed, and on back
independent coil springs are providing the ride. Disc brakes for
the front, and drums for the rear...STOP!
Drive-Ability
Even the throaty exhaust makes you feel like you are behind the
wheel of an original, and it drives beautifully. Handles great, has
decent acceleration, and shifts smoothly. Braking is bias free on
the panic stop, and it has plenty of room behind the wheel for a
"normal" sized driver.
With its beautifully molded fiberglass lines, red paint and white
accenting, along with those necessary wire wheels we could be in MG
TD 1953 heaven. But we also have the reliability and ease of
wrenching of the 1600cc VW drivetrain and no Lucas electrics!
