Vehicle Description
1967 Ford Mustang Fastback GT500 Tribute
A tribute car is defined as a car that has been highly modified to
look mostly like the original but has parts from any year and by
any means does not carry parts or available options from that
particular year. The word clone represents a car that was available
in whatever year and sits with the same mechanicals as a numbers
matching car. Using correct parts and options but without the
numbers matching engine, drivetrain etc.
For consignment a tribute car which pays homage to the 1967 Mustang
Fastback, but utilizes many different than original parts, some
even improved over what would have been same year parts or
drivetrain. This car pays tribute to the 1967 version of the
Mustang Fastback GT500, with plenty of extras. This consignment
started life as a S code 390ci V8 Fastback with a 4-speed
transmission and has undergone a complete restoration transforming
it to the Shelby Fastback GT500 form it is today.
Exterior
Menacing black now covers the steel panels that include a molded in
B pillar aero vent, some wide white stripes running from stem to
stern, and an above rocker triple threat stripe with GT500 logo
within, with the Shelby Cobra badge just above. Also, the hockey
stick cove sports a vent on the rear quarter. The paint can be
described as excellent overall, and the chrome is the same. Window
trimmings, side mirrors handles are also all excellent. The front
grille now sports dual large round fog lamps nestled together in
the center. A rear spoiler has been molded into the rear deck and
presents seamlessly. The taillights are looking Shelby; however
they do not operate sequentially like the Shelby. 17-inch front and
18-inch rear Shelby American Racing wheels are all around.
Interior
Paying tribute to the original Shelby the dash now takes on the
form of the GT500. Large round gauges flank the steering column and
other smaller round gauges are scattered about in a field of
brushed stainless. All gauges are black faced with white type and
numbers surrounded by shiny round bezels. The spread winged black
padded dash top frames a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/iPod interface player
tucked in where the original radio would have been within a metal
white painted lower panel. Seats are beautifully restored and in
Parchment vinyl, low back buckets for the front, and a bench for
the back. A custom center console with some stainless and
cupholders, sports a hurst shifter. Door panels use the Parchment
vinyl and stainless panels too. Way back is a big storage area in
the trunk and on its interior panel are dual speakers for the
Kenwood. A nice Parchment headliner remains fairly tight. Also, a
note to the interior vents, which melt seamlessly into the interior
B pillars.
Drivetrain
TNT Engineering has built the mill, and these guys are not fooling
around. HOLD your breath and see if you can keep it held whilst I
describe this engine!..a 428ci FE stroker now 450 cubes with blue
printed 2x4 Holley carbs, a Scat crankshaft 4.125 inches with King
bearings, Scat I beam connecting rods, forged dish pistons, a
Cloyes double roller timing chain, Comp cams hydraulic roller
camshaft with .580i and .564e lift, Lunati lifters, Smith Bros.
pushrods...that was a mouthful. 428 FE heads with a 3 angle valve
job sit proudly atop the block. The Holleys sit atop a Blue Thunder
intake (2x4), and a Melling high volume oil pump pulls lube from a
Cobra front sump oil pan. A 4 speed toploader is on the back, and
on the posi Ford 9" rear are 3.55 gears. Hooker headers provide
quick evacuation of spent fossils. Awesome! EXHALE...
Undercarriage
All buttoned up, shiny and unbelievably clean, nary a hint of
problems under here! Disc brakes are on front and drums for the
rear just like the original GT500. A new Flowmaster exhaust is
noted working its way back from the healthy mill.
Drive-Ability
A wonderful driver, runner, and accelerator. It ran like it was new
with an exhilarating test drive. After you get past half throttle,
this car is a screamer, although traction is limited by the rear
tires. All functions were working beautifully just like 1967.
A beautiful presenting fast and fun car that will definitely turn
heads. Who can now afford an original? And with all the performance
upgrades who would want to pay for one? A great way to own a
reasonably priced classic, and if something goes awry, it's only a
tribute...albeit a gorgeous one! No expenses spared on the engine,
and it will definitely take your breath away on the drive away from
Classic Auto Mall.
