Vehicle Description
1970 Pontiac LeMans Sport
While the Pontiac GTO gets all the accolades and high selling
prices to go along with the hoopla, truth be told, its sibling, the
LeMans is basically the same car. The LeMans is a great alternative
to spending tens of thousands on a GTO, as both cars share the same
sheet metal, interior components and most mechanical parts. The
1968 to 1972 LeMans models are among the best-looking Pontiacs ever
manufactured and are quite plentiful, with nearly 673,000 built.
Finding parts is easy due to a huge supply of parts cars and a
strong aftermarket.
For consignment, the more affordable LeMans Sport from 1970. This
particular car has a GM crate engine at a consigner stated 358ci,
Keystone Classic wheels, and a GTO spoiler. Can you say screaming
yellow zonker?!
Exterior
Bathed in yellow which covers laser straight steel panels with
awesomely minded gaps everything about this car is straight and
true. Bumpers and all chrome are the beneficiary of careful caring
through time. Above the front bumper is a split grille which has
the Pontiac beak and that is flanked by dual headlights with shiny
bezels. That split grille and beak is mimicked by a chrome
encircled grille. To the rear and we see inset taillights in the
back bumper, more straight steel for the rear quarters and trunk
lid. Roofline has a beautiful tapered descent from the roof to the
trunk lid and clean trimmed glass between. Correct 15 x 7 inch
Keystone Klassic cloverleaf machined shiny wheels are all around
and these are wrapped by BF Goodrich raised white letter radial
T/A's.
Interior
Moving to the interior which is covered in blue vinyl from the door
panels to the seats, which are buckets with adjustable headrests in
front and a long and clean rear bench. These nicely preserved seats
are floating in a sea of blue unfaded carpet and have black rubber
Pontiac floor mats protecting the front. The dash is all original
and presents in blue padding with some wood applique for the deep
inset gauge cluster. Fronting this beautiful dash is a correct
formula steering wheel which has a wood rim. An aftermarket Sony
AM/FM/CD/MP3 player is neatly inserted into a horizontal machined
spun aluminum pattern trim strip. In the center a T bar B&M
shift is mounted and has a rubber tiered boot between the lever and
the hump. Just in front of this is a trio of aftermarket gauges
mounted into a shiny cutout. Blue vinyl is tight and creates the
headliner.
Drivetrain
As the consigner states 385 cubes of Chevrolet V8 are under this
hood. Aftermarket aluminum heads are affixed and have Edelbrock
valve covers. An Edelbrock intake is on and is topped by a single
4bbl carb. On the back a 700R4 4-speed automatic is seen and a
10-bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
Barely a hint of rust to be seen all black shiny steel that is
structurally sound and not even spattered with road dirt. A clean
exhaust snakes its way rearward, passing independent coil springs
up front, and a 4 link with coil springs on the rear. There are
Magnaflow stainless mufflers which are mounted on the floorboards
and have a short pipe exit at their rears. Power disc brakes are on
the front and power drums bring up the rear.
Drive-Ability
A beautiful driver that started right up and handled our test track
passing with flying colors. Good acceleration, nice cruising, and
great brakes and we are all safe here.
A truly wonderful example of the LeMans Sport. Some extra Boyd
Coddington Wheels, the original build sheet found under the rear
seat, and a yellow GTO spoiler with some pinstriped flourish is
included but not currently on the car. Get your "beak on".
