Vehicle Description
2001 Chrysler Prowler
Chrysler engineers were given free rein to design whatever they
wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. Thomas C. Gale,
Chrysler's design and international director "love for 1930s-era
hot rods inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the
retro-styled Plymouth Prowler. Gale, "who has a hopped up 1932 Ford
in his garage, approved the rod-inspired Plymouth Prowler as the
company's follow-up show-stopper to the Dodge Viper. An early
influence is credited to a Chrysler-sponsored project at the Art
Center College of Design that resulted in a thesis by Douglas
"Chip" Foose that included drawings of a retro-roadster. Foose
"designed it as a coupe for Chrysler to begin with but modified it
to a roadster version."
For consignment, a "retro rod" similar to an aftermarket hot rod
body being built from the ground up with all the trimmings, only
this one comes to us directly from a factory, the Chrysler factory.
Only a mere 7,449 consigner stated miles are on this unique facet
of automobilia from a major manufacturer.
Exterior
Whilst using predominantly aluminum panels and adhesive to blend
them together, this Prowler is in excellent condition, with no rust
or fillers, all original. Panels were then coated in PVF which
translates to Prowler Orange Pearl Coat. With its Indy style front
wheels and suspension with added floating fenders that magically
turn with the wheels, to its modern yet retro stylings, chopped
drop top in black canvas, and curved back trunk, you are in
1932/2001 wonderland! Sporting black front bumpers engineered to
float yet absorb a 5MPH crash they are a wonder of engineering.
Prowler Club additions in the form of several chromed accents
thought out are seen to make it just a bit more custom.
Interior
Black leather abounds with the buckets sitting proudly and in near
showroom condition. These flank a center console which houses a
glovebox, cupholder, and Autostick (a shift mounted version of the
Tiptronic gear shift.) Keeping in tune with other earlier rods,
this has a center elongated Prowler Orange Pearl Coat painted oval
which houses the instruments. A/C, power windows, power locks, and
an aftermarket sound system are seen on the dash as well. Above the
steering column is a tachometer.
Drivetrain
A 3.6 Liter V6 powers this light and nimble car, and is fuel
injected. This is attached to a 4-speed automatic "auto-stick" with
the above noted tiptronic auto gear shift actuated gearbox. A 3.89
rear axle allow you to cruise at low RPM and yet have fun when the
pedal hits the metal.
Undercarriage
As expected, nothing of notability, just very slight low mileage
wear and tear, but it is really at a minimum. 4-wheel power disc
brakes are seen, and all else is structurally sound with the
all-wheel independent coil over suspension.
My climb in and test drive revealed that there was a little "kick"
when I pressed the gas and the car had excellent pickup and ran
smoothly. It's definitely a head turner, and not something you see
every day, even at Classic Auto Mall where we see quite a lot, and
all in modern tech retro look form and turnkey LOW LOW mileage
condition you may have to change the break in oil...
