Vehicle Description
1990 Chevrolet C1500 454SS Pickup
The idea of stylized pickups for personal use is nothing new. Think
about the Cameo Carrier, produced from 1955-59 or how about the El
Camino built for 26 years! The El Camino ushered in the idea of the
big block performance variant, and then in 1990-93 model years the
recipe was used for the half ton pickup in the 454 C1500 SS.
For consignment a first-year variant of the big block 454ci C1500
SS, which not only offers up performance but skirts the upgrade and
amenities borderline with near Silverado trim: A/C, Cruise Control,
Tilt Wheel and Sport seats to name a few. Read on for the SS pickup
you will need in your driveway to not only impress your neighbors
but offer up a smile of satisfaction for yourself!
Exterior
For its short production run only black was available for the
exterior color in the first year with other colors being offered in
1992 & 1993, and this one is....black! All black with nice deep
shiny paint for the straight panels (we do note that the hood and
roof have been repainted sans the red metal flake in the paint),
black bumpers, black grille, window surrounds door handles and
dimensional lower body trimmings. Hints of red badging do add some
breakup to the black with a few bowties, 1500, SS badges, as well
as an italic sticker 454, and Chevrolet on the rear tailgate shown
in white. A black vinyl tonneau bed cover is on this SS and
underneath the bed is lined with the factory GM Duraliner which is
in near showroom condition. Lighting plastic is clear, and 15-inch
polished wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Garnet red broadcloth (also the only available choice for these
trucks) with ribbed tuck and roll inserts for the seats and high
back with built in headrests which are a smooth red garnet
broadcloth. Between these nice buckets is a big plastic center
console sporting a large glove box, cupholders and also serves as a
comfy armrest. The dash in black panel, for the arched gauges and
instruments within this field are all clean, as are the central
digital radio and climate controls. To the right of this central
panel is an extra Cassette player complete with built in equalizer.
All in a red field of molded plastic, all very clean and not faded.
More red for the carpet on the floors which is like new, and a
flat, wrinkle free felted headliner is above. Door panels are a
mixture of the truck and roll garnet broadcloth and molded plastic
and feature power locks and power window controls within.
Drivetrain
The 454ci V8 (7.4 liter) fuel injected mill sits within an
absolutely beautiful engine bay, nicely preserved, and very well
maintained. Power is sent through a 3 speed Turbo-Hydramatic auto
transmission and then moves rearward to a 3.73 14 bolt limited slip
rear axle.
Undercarriage
Looking fine underneath with the performance handling package which
contains Bilstein shocks, a 1.25 inch front anti roll bar, and a
12.7:1 steering ratio. Power disc brakes for the front and power
drums for the rear. All structurally sound and no rust seen on the
body structure or framing.
Drive-Ability
A very quick starter, this big block fired up, and it was very
quickly off to the test track. Here, it performed with ease, with
solid braking, and good handling taking into account we are in a
truck, it does a fine job. All functions were in working order, and
the air blew cold.
With its mileage (94,195) do not let this be a deterrent as this
truck looks like new on all fronts. Body is straight and smooth,
paint glossy with a few specks showing, nice interior, and
excellent engine bay. A short bed, with tonneau and liner, and of
course the power that an SS badge brings with it, you can haul
during the week and smoke some of the competition at the local
strip on the weekends, and take the Mrs. out to a fine dinner
arriving in truck style. A multifunctional vehicle and a classic
for sure.
