Widely considered the "original" Austin-Healey, the "Healey
Hundred" Series cars were built from 1953 to 1956. The big four
engine gave the Austin-Healey 100-4 two-thirds more power than its
MG contemporary and 120% more torque, all in a streamlined and
better balanced package, that weighed no more than the MG. Built
largely for the important American market where they fit neatly
between Triumph's TR2 and the larger Jaguar XKs. A true two-seat
roadster, with a purity of line and sense of purpose that has made
them quite sought after by enthusiasts of British sports cars,
accentuated by a rakish fold-down windscreen.
This stunning example chassis BN2-L/230074 was constructed on
December 15, 1955 as a LHD North American Export in Reno Red over
Red upholstery with wire wheels, laminated windscreen, and heater -
as confirmed by British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. The 100 is
believed to have been sold new to Southern California, where it
would reside until early 2016. A 1957 California "Pink Slip" and
Registration Card record Paul Cote Jr. of Los Angeles as the owner,
followed up with a 1958 Registration Card. California license plate
number HFA638. The Healey was later owned by Mr. Desanto of Palm
Desert, CA, eventually selling in 2016 to a prominent collector of
St. Louis, Missouri.
This stunning BN2 was the recipient of a comprehensive restoration
to an outstanding presentation. Every nut, bolt and wire were
addressed and refreshed to new during the rotisserie restoration -
as was the paint, tailored cabin and adornments. Today, the car
remains in beautiful condition, well suited for continued show
display, as well as eligible entry into nearly any significant
vintage automotive rally worldwide.
The glossy paintwork, as reflected on the exterior, cabin, both
bays, and undercarriage display an elegant tone of Imperial Red
metallic over Tan leather wrapped 100S style seats with black
piping, carpeting and surrounds. All utmost quality materials. The
vehicle is not currently fitted with a top and side curtains.
The Roadster's engine bay, undercarriage and luggage compartments
present just as nicely as its outward appearance. A tidy engine bay
reveals the numbers-matching (1B/230074) powerplant with correct
appearances - rebuild to 'Le Mans' specifications with a Denis
Welch Motorsport "full race" head, proper air box and auxiliaries.
A stealthy spare tire assembly stows neatly inside the trunk, along
with a bespoke full-cab, half-zip tonneau cover, while not in use.
To complete the ensemble, a sporty Le Mans fuel filler cap is
fitted, and for the driver, period style Suixtil leather gloves and
bag. In addition to the accompanying early California Registration
documents, it's of note that the BN2's BMIHT Certificate was
autographed by famed Austin-Healy 100 designer Gerry Coker in
2008.
A Summer 2020 scheduled service and inspection was recently
performed on the Healey with outstanding results. Electric
overdrive on the rebuilt BN2 4-speed is a welcomed addition during
distance touring. Additionally, the 100-4 received a complete set
(5) of all new 165SR15 Michelin XZX tires and Michelin tubes. A
truly versatile instrument for nearly any vintage automotive event,
this particular 1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 BN2 'Le Mans' offers many
opportunities to its next caretaker, and now available for
worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas
showroom.
