1938 Chevrolet Sport Coupe
Chevrolet advertised that its 1938 models had new modern body
styling. In truth, the body shell, fenders and running boards were
the same as in 1937. A new grille was composed of horizontally
arranged chromium bars, alternating one wide and four narrow. It
was in two pieces, right and left. A center molding divided them.
New bumper had a full width indentation, about one half inch wide,
that was painted black. Headlights and tail lamps were of a
carryover design. The hood had ventilators highlighted by three
chrome horizontal moldings. The bullet shaped headlights were
mounted closely to the radiator grille. Inside the seats were two
inches wider. Improved worm and roller sector steering was
used.
For consignment, a 1938 Chevrolet Sport Coupe dipped in a Root Beer
Exterior color (actually Honda Mayan Bronze) fully restored, nice
interior customized, and a 350ci V8 crate mill under the hood. She
was a street rod and titled so, then after a few changers and
owners, is now titled as a 1938 Reconstructed Vehicle.
Exterior
1938 brought a nice designer's pen to the drawing table and created
this 2 interior seat and rumble seat Rubenesque styled sport coupe.
Receiving a full stripping and sanding, then bathed in the Root
Beer miles deep paint, its minding its gaps very nicely. This
procedure was performed mid 2012. The front of the car starts out
narrow for the grille and flanking bullet headlights, and widens as
it goes to the front glass. Free flowing fenders on front and rear
are connected by a running board with a stainless step trim in the
center. On back the Continental kit is seen with a stainless
surround and an airbrushed artwork proclaiming the car a "Root Beer
Float". Below this is a nice chrome bumper with a bump out nicely
polished. 14 and 15 inch respective to front and rear American
Racing Torque Thrust wheels are all around.
Interior
A swing of the door and a nice wide swatch of tan leather covers
the door panels. It sports the original chromed sill, and levers
and cranks. On the bottom is Root Beer metal and a dark brown
armrest/pull is also seen. Moving inside late model overstuffed
bucket seats with fold down center armrests, sit neatly on maroon
tubs and are ergonomically perfect to fit any driver size. Nice tan
carpet floods the floors, and upfront is a beautifully restored and
slightly modified dash made up of root beer painted metal with
plenty of art deco inspired stainless and chromed accenting. Gauge
cluster is new, the center panel is custom fabricated and houses
the temp and fan controls which include vintage air conditioning
courtesy of "Hot Rod". Another stainless panel is reserved for the
glovebox door and a small central shiny panel mounted below the
dash houses two buttons and the new wiper system on/off knob. Below
this is an aftermarket Alpine Sound System. A 1998 Pontiac Grand
Prix provided the steering column which is topped by a leather
covered rally steering wheel. A shout out to the rumble seat which
opens up with ease and is also covered in the pristine tan leather.

Drivetrain
Under the hood could not be more impressive where here we see root
beer painted interior, and then a totally polished and blinged out
350ci V8 crate engine has been slipped in, and it just gleams. On
top is a polished Edelbrock intake manifold with an Edelbrock
4-barrel carb. On back is a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission,
and way back is a Ford 9-inch rear with 3.00 gears. Some special
bolt ons as of note would be a Ron Francis wiring kit, a Walker
Cobra radiator, HEI Distributor, new CPP master cylinder, and a
Holley fuel pump with stainless steel lines throughout.
Undercarriage
Underneath is nearly showroom quality with care taken to restore
the frame and adding on a new gas tank, a new exhaust system
courtesy of Lo-Coast complete with Patriot headers at the engine,
chrome oil pan, tubular upper and lower control arms, Flaming River
& Borgenson steering components, and Chassis Engineering rear
suspension. Disc brakes are now upfront and drums for the rear, all
power assisted.
Drive-Ability
An easy in and out, plenty of room and adjustments to make it just
right baby bear. She fired right up and ran like the local fire
brigade rushing to a nearby conflagration. Great handling, smooth
shifting and all functions working properly. A nice cruiser
too!
This is a nicely built foundation from which our consigner
proceeded to bling it out with some new parts, and making it over
the top just like the head of the root beer does when you add the
dollop of ice cream, make it float away, and you too can have a
barrel of fun driving it around.
