1965 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible ?Genuine SS Convertible (code

SS Convertibles sold in 1965 ?Regal Red (code R) exterior with
Ivory vinyl interior (code 802) and white folding canvas top ?327
CID Turbo Fire V-8 engine with several Edelbrock parts ?Four-speed
manual transmission (code M20 #P0604) ?Power steering Fifty-five
years ago, General Motors and Chevrolet were on top of the world.
GM controlled at least half of the domestic sales market and was
the largest automaker in the world. One of the examples of the
company?s prowess was the Chevrolet Impala, Chevy?s full-size sedan
since 1958. This example is an actual Super Sports Convertible
(style code 65-16667), one of 27,443 SS Convertible sold that year.
This example has a very interesting vin number of 166675J193000!
This example was made in GM?s Janesville, Wisconsin factory (VIN
code J) during the second week of March 1965 (code 02C). Finished
in Regal Red (code R), the car?s paint is in very good order
overall and it has a new, white, power-folding canvas top but the
top only goes up and down by hand. The engine bay is extremely tidy
and the car?s body is overall nice but has some minor blemishes.
The chrome bumpers are in very good condition. This Impala rolls on
Goodyear Eagle Sport radials, size 225/60R16 at all four corners.
Each tire is mounted on a gray, five-spoke American Racing alloy
wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good order. Under the
hood is a 327 CID Turbo-Fire V-8 engine with an Edelbrock air
cleaner, carburetor and intake manifold. Backing up this motor is a
Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience
features include power steering but this is mainly a racer, with no
other power assists or air-conditioning. Inside, the car?s Ivory
(code 802) vinyl upholstery is in very good order, as is the
contrasting black carpet. The front buckets with their chrome
frames are wide enough for most body types while the rear bench has
room for three people. A two-spoke black steering wheel faces the
driver. The white over black inner door panels and black instrument
panel are in good, original order but the speedometer is
inoperable. A floor-mounted shift lever and factor AM radio
complete the interior. Nineteen Sixty-Five Super Sport exteriors
differed only slightly from regular Impalas. Rocker panel trim was
deleted. ?Super Sport? scripts replaced the ?Impala? fender badges.
The new center console housed a rally-type electric clock, and full
instrumentation now included a vacuum gauge. Totally redesigned in
1965, the Impala set an all-time industry annual sales record of
more than one million units in the U.S.; which has never been
bettered. The new full-size Chevys featured dramatically rounded
sides, and an all-new front end with new hood contours, curved,
frameless side glass (for pillarless models), and sharper angled
windshield with newly reshaped vent windows. Sport Coupes wore a
sleek semi-fastback roofline, and wheel well moldings were revised.
Chevrolet promoted the cars? Wide-Stance design, adhesively bonded
windshield and improved full-coil suspension. A two-tone instrument
panel put gauges in a recessed area ahead of the driver. The ?X?
frame was dropped for a new Girder-Guard full-width perimeter frame
which reduced the size of the inside driveline tunnel and
redesigned suspension. Two-range Powerglide, as well as
Synchro-Mesh three- and four-speed manual transmissions were
available. The Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was offered
for the first time. As with previous years, Impalas featured more
chrome trim inside and out, with pleated tufted upholstery and door
panels plus simulated walnut trim on the lower instrument panel.
Competition to this Impala SS Convertible in 1965 included Buick?s
Wildcat Custom Convertible, Dodge?s Coronet 440 Convertible, Ford?s
Galaxie 500 Convertible, Mercury?s Monterey Convertible,
Oldsmobile?s Dynamic 88 Convertible, Plymouth?s Fury III
Convertible, Pontiac?s Bonneville Convertible and Rambler?s
Ambassador 990 Convertible. If you?re looking for a classic mid-60s
convertible, you should stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to
check out this Impala droptop. It?s a great driver, a cool cruiser
and finished in a classic color combination with a Muncy 4-speed!
