Rare Find - With the recession that hit in 1958, every automaker
saw a sharp decline in sales from the years prior. Buick went from
selling over 700k cars in 1955 to only 244k in 1958! So finding
anything from 1958 seems to be getting harder and harder as the
years pass by, and finding one like this with all the history and
in this condition makes it an even greater find! Born at the South
Gate, CA plant, this 1958 Super Riviera 4dr hardtop was sold new in
San Jose, CA in February, 1958 where it stayed with the original
owner until she moved to WI in 1976. Standard equipment included
the Variable Pitch Dynaflow transmission, power steering, padded
upper dash, deluxe steering wheel, Foamtex seat cushions, full
wheel covers, clock, trunk light, and license plate frames.
Optional items checked off on the order form include
heater/defroster, Sonomatic radio w/ manual antenna, Safety group F
(back up lights, glare proof mirror, parking brake, padded lower
dash, safety speed warning buzzer), windshield washer w/wide angle
wipers, E-Z eye glass, power brakes, chrome door guards, dual
exhaust, and autronic eye w/map light. Once in WI the original
owner continued to enjoy this rolling artwork until she finally
decided to trade it on a new car in 1982! An employee of the
dealership, an avid collector, purchased it for his enjoyment and
owned it until 2000, when he sold to the most recent owner, who
maintained it nicely over the past 20 years. From what we can tell
it has received a partial (or full) repaint at some point in the
original color, and the third owner had the front seat
reupholstered in 2004, along with new carpet and door panels. The
rest of this car is all survivor. Runs and drives excellent! Recent
service work includes all new wheel cylinders, oil change, front
wheel bearings, water pump, and some much needed exercise. The
greatest part of this car? Every single service record from 1958 to
1982, folded up neatly in the glove box when we found it.
