As it turns out, not every survivor-grade fastback with the Shelby
name is a six-figure car. 1986 Dodge Charger Shelby is a sleek
turbocharged and fuel-injected with coupe that was lost to history
for a while, and has now been resurrected properly so that you can
enjoy a budget-priced fun classic that also gets some extra
attention.
The Omni-based Chargers were of a different breed than the muscle
car legends we associate with this name. But they may just fit into
the Shelby lifestyle better than some of its Hemi brothers. Carroll
Shelby loved better motors in lightweight packages, and this is the
right place to start. Plus, the long hood and hatchback profile
were just begging for some speedy style. It has an exclusive nose
treatment that added more emphasis to both the steeper slope of the
inner hood and the offset power bulge for the turbo. There's also a
full ground effects body kit and a well-integrated spoiler. The
blue and silver take full advantage of the two-tone to really show
off these special pieces as much as possible. Not only is a
well-coordinated racing stripe package an expensive kind of paint
theme to create at a factory, but also this is believed to be
original to the car! The low odometer even is believed to reflect
the car's actual mileage. We could tell you that it averaged only
about 1,400 miles annually, but really, this one was off the road
and hidden away in a climate-controlled garage years. It was
correctly resurrected in 2008, and so you have hints of a barn find
story with this Shelby!
There's more great preservation inside. And just like the exterior
it's an impressive two-tone blue and silver presentation on the
seats, panels, and carpeting. Even the hatchback's trunk is done to
match and looking fantastic. So you know you'll love showing off
every inch inside (especially the Shelby logo embroidered in every
headrest.) There are nice comfort features like an armrest console,
rear defroster, and Chrysler's premium AM/FM stereo w/equalizer,
but what you'll really like is the true driver experience. You get
a high-back bucket seat with good bolstering, a grippy steering
wheel that also gives you a good view to the full gauges, and the
stick shift fees substantial in your hands.
When you open the hood, your eyes gravitate to the bright head
cover in the middle that says everything you want to know: TURBO.
The 2.2-liter fuel-injected motor was turbocharged to nearly 150
horsepower, which was quite good during the low-power era of the
'80s. And more importantly, the lightweight package gives this
coupe 0 to 60 times that rival some established Europeans of the
day. When this was resurrected from its slumber, there were new
driver's side CV joints added (and the passenger side ones come
with the sale.) Add in the five-speed manual transmission, front
disc brakes, a semi-independent rear suspension, and sporty Dunlop
tires, and this is some nimble fun for very little cash.
Complete with maintenance records and title documentation, this is
a sleek Shelby with a great originality and a ton of fun to drive.
That all makes for an exceptional package at any price. Don't miss
this hot hatch, call today!!!
