For Sale: 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass in Jefferson, USA_WI

Vehicle Description

1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass SX Holiday Coupe

If you like Oldsmobiles, like I do, then you know what this is.  It is certainly rare and, in my opinion, very desirable.  The Cutlass SX was only made in 1970 and part of 1971.  It is basically a 442 in sheep’s clothing.  It was meant to help beat the insurance premiums assessed to the high performance cars of the day.  The option code is Y79.

High performance is what this car is all about.  Not only is it the Cutlass SX, which means it has the 455 Cubic inch torque monster engine, but this car is the W32 version, which means it has a four barrel carburetor.  Just like the 442.  It is believed that there were less than 900 of these made and it is one of the rarest Oldsmobile muscle cars.

This particular car was built in the Fremont, California production plant.  It was sold new in Tulare, CA, where it spent most of its life.  It was offered at Barrett-Jackson in 2001, then ended up at a Classic Car dealership in WI.  From there it was sold to a man in Texas.  After a short period of time, he sold it to a collector in Las Vegas.  The man from Las Vegas is serious about Cutlass SX cars and is considered the foremost expert on the model.  He hosts a website dedicated to the characteristics of the SX Cutlasses and has a registry for them.  Obviously this car is well researched.

One of the keys to proving the validity of a Cutlass SX is the Build Sheet.  Fortunately, the Build Sheet was found and is with the car in a thick binder of documents.  It tells the story.  This car also contains the original engine and transmission that is was built with.  That is another important factor.  It has been partially restored with respect to originality.  There have been a few embellishments.

It has always been Astro Blue with a white vinyl top and Blue vinyl upholstery.  The exterior was refurbished in 2010 at a cost of nearly $10000.  The interior is mostly original and is still in great condition.

The 455 was rebuilt at a cost of $7500.  It has been well cared for and now has about 20000 miles since.  It was rebuilt to accept unleaded fuel.  Premium is required.  The transmission has been serviced and performs properly.

Let’s go back to the options:  it has power steering and brakes, with the front being disc.  The suspension is Heavy Duty, as is the cooling system for both the engine and transmission.  The Air Conditioning system has been rebuilt and converted to 134a Freon.  The interior has a wood grain instrument panel housing the Rally Pac gauges.  The steering wheel is the Deluxe model.  The Strato Bucket seats are separated by a center console that contains the shifter for the special Turbo 400 automatic transmission.  The differential ratio is 3.08 to 1.  The Anti Spin gears are now housed in an aftermarket W27 Aluminum housing.  The large sway bars and trailing arms are aftermarket, too.  The OAI induction system and Thorson Hood were added during the repaint.  A correct SX would have a flat hood without stripes.  The rear bumper and exhaust tips are correct and just like you would find on a 442

The moldings are bright and it has door edge guards.  There are dual outside Sport Mirrors.  The wheels are now Super Stock II in the correct Argent color.  They are wrapped with BF Goodrich Radial TA tires of 245/60/14 size.  Originally this car had steel wheels with full wheel covers, like the spare.  There is a correct jack, hook and wrench in the trunk.  Because it has A/C, it has Soft-Ray tinted glass.  All features on this car work properly, as do the locks.

The earlier mentioned binder contains useful information and lots of receipts that will help you understand how well the car has been maintained.  In addition, you will find original Owner’s Manuals and the December 2005 edition of Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine that featured this car.  It isn’t just any car that becomes a magazine car.  It was a great story about the rarity of the Cutlass SX and how it was truly the Gentleman’s Hotrod.

While this car is certainly show worthy, you must not be afraid to get out and drive it.  It has been driven about 140,000 miles already.  There is plenty of enjoyment left and it was rebuilt and maintained with just that in mind.

I am a lover of Oldsmobiles.  I hope you are as well.  That means you will understand the rarity of what this car is.  You will also understand that it truly is a Gentleman’s Hotrod and a 442 in sheep’s clothing.  This car will perform at a very high level.  It will always be a conversation piece for those in the know.
