Following in the footsteps of Paul Bracq's iconic fintail models,
the Mercedes-Benz W108 models are considered to be some of the most
impressively built cars of the time. Boasting four-wheel
independent suspension and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, a
range of engine options were available throughout production, but
the connoisseur's choice is considered to be the M116 3.5-litre
V-8.
Aimed primarily at the American market, this engine produced 200
bhp and 211 lb ft of torque with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection
and quickly developed a reputation for its reliability and would
become the basis for Mercedes-Benz engines through 1991. It
utilized a cast-iron block for rigidity, economy, and better sound
damping, and it featured cross-flow wedge cylinder heads with
rocker-operated valves, which were driven by a single overhead
camshaft per bank. The cams were chain-driven for a long life.
Alongside coupe and convertible bodystyles, the saloon was first
introduced in 1971, providing a top speed of 125 mph alongside the
build quality and luxury that one would expect with a
Mercedes-Benz. Just over 11,000 examples 280 SE 3.5s were built
between July 1970 and September 1972.
This particular right-hand drive example is fitted with an
automatic transmission, making for comfortable cruising. First
registered in the U.K. in October of 1972, this 280 SE 3.5 saloon
has enjoyed just four registered owners from new. From 1984 to
2010, the car was registered as 124 AH in the U.K., and was later
reunited with its original registration number, FKA 114L. Finished
in an attractive shade of blue with a tan interior, it is described
by the consignor as being in good condition throughout, and is
offered with its original owner's manual, a handful of previous
service invoices, as well as a V5C, a clear HPI report, and a tax
disc dated December 1972.
Compared to its coupe and cabriolet siblings, the 280 SE 3.5 Saloon
offers incredible value for money and increased practicality,
making for an ideal first-time collector car. A car that can be
driven regularly and enjoyed by the whole family, this 280 SE 3.5
Saloon begs to be driven and enjoyed by its next owner.
