Vehicle Description
This is the last of the big, comfortable Lincoln coupes. This
triple-black 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a rare two-door
produced in the final year such a substantial car came with the big
block V8 engine from the Ford Motor Company.
You might come across a few Lincoln coupes from 1978, but those
will usually be Mark V cars. This is the plusher and rarer Town
Coupe. These cars look especially nice because they take the regal
square-jaw lines of the Continental sedan, and apply them to a more
personal luxury vehicle. 1978 was a pivotal year because everyone
knew the days of the large personal luxury cruisers were numbered.
Cadillac had downsized its model line, and Lincoln also was not
going to be able to offer its largest Continental ever for much
longer. In fact, we didn't know it then, but this would be the last
time an optional big block would be available...but more on that in
a moment. This coupe comes in its factory-correct black, and it's
even believed to be the original paint application. Today it
retains a nice high gloss finish that makes this car standout for
more than just its size. It's also quite nice to have the matching
black vinyl half-roof in pristine condition. Plus, the big chrome
bumpers, Rolls-Royce style grille, and full trim package keeps an
exceptional presentation. So you can tell that this special coupe
was properly respected.
Open the door and you'll see the kind of luxury that could only
come from the 1970s. The black leather seats are exceptionally nice
with the pillow top design that is just as comfy as it looks. There
are even armrests, front and rear, for true individual luxury.
Vintage luxury is all about the atmosphere it creates, and so you a
have plenty of matching wood-like trim; the front seats
individually power adjust; and there are the nice factory extras
like cruise control, the AM/FM stereo, and power windows. If you
want to invest in restoring service to pieces like the air
conditioning, headlight door controls, or Cartier clock, they
continue to appear quite complete and ready. And overall, you can
see that there has been a responsible effort to make sure this
classic luxury Lincoln retains a premium time capsule
atmosphere.
Ford's smooth and refined 460 cubic-inch V8 provides effortless
performance in the Continental Town Coupe. This was the final year
for the big block option, which is always welcomed in the engine
bay because it has enough torque to pull a boat. Of course, you
will likely never want to tow a yacht in this big bodied car, but
it's this kind of available strength that allow you to smoothly,
and quickly, cruise away from the stoplight. Fans of originality
will love how the big blue Ford engine looks absolutely correct,
right down to the decals. What you don't see is a newer Pypes dual
exhaust under the car that gives this big dog a little extra bite.
While this is the perfect car for the drive-in (after all, its
interior is more comfortable than any movie theater seat), there's
much more to this coupe. It's got power steering, power brakes,
front discs, and a three-speed automatic transmission. This is the
kind of luxury that can easily take you in comfort to car shows as
far away as you want.
This the triple black Continental Town Coupe has all the great
stuff you love about the 70s, an it's in a package that remains
exceptionally comfortable. This is big luxury for a little price.
