Vehicle Description
2008 Volvo C70 Convertible
Volvo, Latin for "I roll", was born on April 14th, 1927 when the
first car "Jakob" left the factory in Gothenburg, Sweden. Founded
by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson, the company was formed on
a background of quality and safety which were both of paramount
importance, a concept that still applies to the Volvo cars of
today. The fledgling company produced both closed top and cabriolet
models of their new four-cylinder OV4 and PV4 models, which were
constructed to better withstand the harsh Swedish climate, than
contemporary US imports. Both carried the Swedish symbol for
iron.
In keeping with the Volvo (Latin for "I roll") tradition we have
for consignment, a 2008 C70 convertible. When I use the word
convertible, be aware it is not in the usual soft top sense made of
canvas. This car has a retractable hardtop, which is like the Fords
of the late 50s where the hardtop opens up into 3 sections and
retracts into the boot, all the while lowering all the side
windows. A marvel of engineering, worth the price of admission just
to watch the top go up and down!
Exterior
Upfront there is a replaced neoprene bumper and it has been rattle
can painted? The remainder of the body is Celestial Blue Metallic,
with straight steel, and well minded gaps. A beautifully curved
hardtop which retracts mechanically into the boot, a true marvel of
engineering, and fun to watch too! Spoked alloy wheels, correct
badges, and we have a wonderful sports car with room for 4, and
very safe on the accident scale.
Interior
Various tones of taupe and gray/beige are inside with the door
panels using several tones intermixed along with just a pinch of
wood veneer. The veneer on the driver's door pull has seen some
water, and the upper sill is smudged. Inside the rounded dash
neatly houses the instrument knobs and presents in the same two
tone colors as the doors, and has a central wood veneer curved
riser that uses the gear shift, seat adjustments, climate controls,
seat heaters, and digital radio with a CD player. Also, switches
for the power top, a power outlet, and a tamboured plastic storage
cup holder area. Flanking this wood are light beige leather
buckets. These show some cracking on the bolsters particularly on
the driver's side, and all have suffered some smudging. In back a 2
plus 2 bench is covered and leather appears a little loose on those
coverings, but they remain clean. 2 tone vinyl dark and light make
up the remaining interior covering panels, and base for the console
which has a light beige leather covered glove compartment/armrest.
Taupe carpet floods the floors and is covered with beige rubber
mats.
Drivetrain
A 2.5 liter Inline 5-cylinder engine with a turbo is in the engine
bay and is mounted longitudinally. Some fading on the plastic, but
overall clean. It is equipped with EFI and a Gear-tronic 5-speed
automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust but mostly rust free floorpans, unibody
and suspension parts. Also, plenty of ground effects panels to
minimize the air getting into the underside nooks and crannies.
Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and are very clean, as well
as the suspension which for the front is Independent with McPherson
Struts, and a multilink setup for the rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good runner on the acceleration front,
cruising speeds, and solid braking. All functions were working
nicely during our test drive.
With its retractable hardtop being the definite highlight, the
other features are just icing on this cake. Leather, plenty of
conveniences, and a smooth running inline 5 cylinder with a turbo
booster and EFI, and you could have a date with a Swede. Although
she's not blonde, not wearing a dress, and not carrying 5-1 liter
mugs of bier, but she still looks great!
