Matchless Mustang - 1986 Ford Mustang GT €"Hemmings Classic Cars,
June 2013 The writers at Hemmings expanded on their esteem and
enthusiasm for the '86 Fox-body Mustang GT: With that 1986 pony
car, Ford engineers proved that they had cracked the code that had
tantalized them for nearly 20 years, creating an exciting car that
sipped fuel, relatively speaking, and was emissions-compliant. The
secret was the microprocessor--a silicon solution to the horsepower
equation, which made possible the precise metering of air, fuel and
spark. The basic structure of the 302-cu in (5.0 liter) engine was
largely unchanged from the tens of millions of small-block V-8s
that Ford had been cranking out since the late 1960s, though it was
beefed up a bit for use in the '86 Mustang. One more thing: A
proper five-speed manual, the Borg-Warner T-5, was standard kit on
the GT.... The drivetrain was an instant hit and Mustang sales
reflected it. Offered here is a very desirable, fully overhauled,
and tastefully upgraded '86 Mustang GT Convertible; open-air
performance in a classic Fox-body Mustang. Overall, the car's
condition is excellent, both cosmetically and mechanically. At just
under 64,000 miles, this Mustang has travelled just a very
conservative 1,900 miles per-year on average. The car's white
exterior paint is uniformly glossy and free of imperfections. The
body is straight with factory tolerances throughout reflecting its
accident-free, Carfax report. The gray-fabric convertible top and
cover are undamaged and retain their factory appearance and
function. Rubber trim on the bumpers and flanks of the car is
fresh-appearing. GT-model identification, including that
incorporated in the broad hood stripe, is free of fading or surface
degradation. The 5.0 engine identification emblems are also present
and in good order. Windshield glass and lighting lenses are clear
and not cracked. A factory luggage rack is mounted on the top of
the trunk. The cast-aluminum Mustang GT-exclusive wheels are
undamaged and free of curb rash; they're mounted with BFG
performance tires. The interior continues the car's overall
exceptional condition. The period tech-look instrument cluster and
dash are as-new. Surfaces on the controls and switchgear are
unworn. The manual 5-speed transmission console-mounted shifter
retains its factory shift knob showing the shift pattern. Power
windows, power convertible top, and air conditioning all function
as intended. A Pioneer cd-capable audio head unit is in place in
the lower dash. Textured fabric upholstery on the front bucket and
rear bench seats in two-tone gray with red accents and edge piping
is clean and free of rips or signs of abuse. Black
Mustang-logo-embroidered carpet mats protect the light-gray
carpeting. Under the hood, the HO (high output) 5-liter V8, a
development of the 302 cubic-inch engine that has long been a Ford
performance powerplant, holds the spotlight in a very clean and
well detailed engine bay. All associated components are present and
properly installed. The car's undercarriage is similarly complete
and shows no damage or any sign of abuse. The Flowmaster exhaust
system from the catalytic converters back stands out. And sounds
amazing as well. Mechanical work on this Fox Body from August 2020
includes the following: new radiator,
