Vehicle Description
2001 Dodge Dakota Pickup
Sales brochures at dealerships touted the RAM toughness, load
handling longevity/long haul durability, and reading their copy,
one would think these trucks would be around forever. And alas some
still are!
For consignment, a Dodge iconic Magnum 360 cubic-inch V8 engine
mated to a heavy duty 46RE automatic transmission, the Dakota R/T
is a budget-friendly sport truck capable of generating plenty of
thrills without emptying your savings account. A one-inch lowered
suspension, quick-ratio steering box, and larger diameter front and
rear sway bars makes the R/T a blast on winding roads. Oversized
17-inch diameter wheels also help the Dakota stick to the pavement
around the tightest of corners. Dakota is the only truck that truly
drives like a sports car. This is largely due to its smaller size,
as a full-size pickup is simply too large to experience a similar
feel.
Exterior
A silver dollar if you will, and then some, we are graced with an
R/T in our presence. This is not just your run of the mill R/T
either, as it has a ground effects package with extra fairings and
rocker embellishments and driving lights installed. With its
Freightliner front end, a scooped hood is flanked by large front
quarters and a big bumper below giving it plenty of bulk. Tinted
glass for the cab with black trimmings, and on back a hard cover
for the bed complete with locking mechanism. The rear bumper has
been shaved for a cleaner look, and dual cat back exhausts peek out
from underneath. The tailgate has also been shaved of it's handle,
and it can be actuated from the interior. Under the locking hard
cover tonneau is a rubber lined bed in very nice condition. 17-inch
wheels are all around and wrapped in like new rubber.
Interior
Clean gray cloth covers the buckets and some of the door panels. An
original dash is up front, and a leather wrapped steering wheel is
in front of the dash with a few finger controls within it. Door
panels are nice and clean, and we see power windows and locks. A
factory sliding rear window is on the back, and just a note the
odometer reads 55,700 original miles. Clean gray carpet is reserved
for the floors and a fuzzy gray headliner has an upper center
console with a digital readout and some extra storage above.
Drivetrain
5.9 liters of power is under the hood and this produces 250hp.
Electronic fuel injection with a cold air intake is on top, and a
4-speed automatic (46RE) is on back. 3.55 gears are reserved for
the rear axle. All is in excellent mechanical condition.
Undercarriage
Peering underneath we see some surface rust on the usual suspects,
but all solid and structurally sound. Power disc brakes are on
front, and power drums for the rear, and a Flowmaster exhaust is
now installed.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, this truck really does handle like a sports car.
It's lower to the ground than the standard offerings in the pickup
genre, and it helps a lot. Good smooth acceleration and shifting,
and a nice quiet comfortable cruise at highway speed. All functions
were working just perfectly.
A beautiful silver example with the ground effects package to add
even more to its already sporty looks, straight steel, good paint,
and clean interior with low miles, you cannot go wrong. A hauler
that is also a mauler on the track, definitely will open some
unsuspecting eyes!
