....TECHNICAL INFORMATION..... ..... The Austin Healey 100 BNI is
as classic a British Sports Car as they come. This two seat
Roadster, arguably the most desirable Austin Healey in Donald
Healey's stable of sports cars. By the time BN2 series of 100M were
being produced, this model, BNI, was becoming well known for its
ability at circuit rallying and racing. This led to the production
of the Le Mans specification which increased power output to a
maximum 110 bhp. Also, Donald produced a post-production Le Mans
kit, which is seen on the car offered here. The kits included
bigger high compression pistons, special intake manifold, bigger
carburetors a cold air box and air tubes, a Lucas distributer,
larger valves, a factory style aluminum louvered bonnet, Le Mans
leather hold down strap, and a front stabilizer anti roll bar.
.....Donald Healey built one Healey 100 for the London Auto Show,
The 100 was well received and production of the car proceeded.
Donald named the car the Austin Healey 100 for the car's ability to
reach 100 mph. The 100 was the first of three models later called
the "Big Healeys" to distinguish them from the much smaller
Austin-Healey Sprite, The first 100s, BNI, were equipped with 2660
cc engines and manual transmission a three-speed unit with
overdrive on second and tope This car was modified to receive the
popular Toyota five speed transmission eliminating the troublesome
overdrive. A total of 10030 were built from May 1953 until replaced
by the BN2 model in August 1955. ......What is most interesting
about this car is the folding windshield, which decreases
aerodynamic drag and increased the top speed from 102 to 111 mph.
Healey also produced a race version, the ultra-rare IOOS, and
offered similar "M Le Mans" racing upgrades to cars sold for street
use, either at the factory or through dealerships. The IOOS was 1st
in class and 12th overall in its entry in the grueling "24 Hours of
Le Mans" Race. On the seven-mile-long Mulsane straight, at speeds
exceeding 100 mph, the front bonnet would lift which prompted the
use of the leather strap to hold down the bonnet.
