Vehicle Description
This 1978 Mercury Cougar represents a well-done vintage package of
the kind classic we just don't see anymore. So if you love vintage
cruising, this is the V8 sedan that offers a head-turning style for
quite a nice price.
We don't always remember there was a Cougar sedan. The first three
generations were a two-door only, but this 4th gen opened it up to
a full lineup. And these longer sedans just seem likes they give
you more space for added Mercury elegance. The factory-correct
Chamois Glamour is absolutely vintage, but it still gives of a nice
copper-like glow in the sunshine. The white vinyl roof is pure
classic premium, and the matching pinstripe is all part of this
thoughtful look. Bright chrome bumpers, the waterfall grille, and
Ford mag wheels with whitewalls have the right vintage style. Plus,
the full-length trim is not only complete and bright, but it also
serves to show off how straight the body panels remain after over
four decades. It really is a well done classic, right down to the
details like the CB antenna on the back and the hallmark Cougar
hood ornament leading the way.
The factory-correct Burnished Saddle interior harmonizes with the
earthy colors of the exterior to deliver a good-looking total
package that represents the 1970s correctly. The condition of the
seats, door panels, dash, carpeting, and all the other fundamentals
have a quality and classic presentation so that hopping in feels
like a time capsule. Even the wood-like trim is looking quite nice.
These were intermediate sized in the 1970s, but today that means
big room for comfort. The front has a fold-down armrest for
individual space, and the rear has plenty of leg room and an airy
atmosphere from the rear opera windows. And while this one is great
to share with family and friends, it's also is centered around the
driver. You get a dual-spoke XR7 steering wheel with working cruise
control. Beyond that that, the five round gauge cluster has a
sporty look. It's also an easy reach to the heat/defrost controls
and correct AM/FM radio. You even have a classic CB radio cleanly
mounted under the dash.
With a car that's been so correct/classic so far, you'll be quite
happy to see a highly authentic engine bay. Ford's 302 cubic-inch
V8 is something we always like to see since its hardy and powerful.
And this one really gets the stock look correct, right down to the
factory decals. But originality doesn't mean missing out on
maintenance, and the way this one fires up reaffirms the feeling
that this Cougar has led a well-respected life thus far. So you'll
love taking it out on the road. After all, the three-speed
automatic transmission, cruise control, power steering, sway bars
front & rear, and power brakes w/discs up front all make this
Mercury is a terrific choice for a vintage cruiser.
