Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1990 Chevrolet C1500 454
SS pickup truck with only 20,000 original miles. Ordered by Larry
Kopp, a national drag racing champion and lifelong Chevy enthusiast
who appeared in some Chevrolet ads in the late 1990s. Kopp owned
and operated Ted's Towing Service, his family business in
Baltimore, while racing cars as a hobby. He won the 1976 NHRA
Modified Eliminator Championship and after turning pro in 1998 he
won the Pro Stock Truck title that same year.
For the first two years of production, the SS 454 pickup was only
offered in black - but Kopp wanted a red one, so immediately after
delivery he had the truck professionally repainted in garnet red
metallic. The family gave it to his chief mechanic after Kopp's
untimely death in 2004 from pancreatic cancer. The son of the
current owner, who is active in Corvette racing, acquired it in a
private sale from Kopp's mechanic in 2018. This truck is offered
for sale publicly for the first time since it was ordered.
The 454 SS, produced in limited numbers, was the best-performing
full-size truck of its era. All of them had the top-of-the line
Silverado trim package and featured bucket seats with a center
console, a stiffer suspension and sway bars for better handling,
and of course a fuel-injected big block 454 cubic inch V8 under the
hood.
Condition inside and out is everything you would expect for a
20,000-mile example - it's like new. Bone stock and unmolested
aside from the color-change repaint done when it was delivered
(which still shows to a better-than-factory standard). A copy of
the original order form, a letter from Chevrolet to Larry Kopp with
a commemorative custom window sticker, and the factory books and
cassette are included with the sale. A/C has been converted to
R134a and is blowing cold.
