Vehicle Description
1993 GMC Typhoon
The GMC Typhoon is a high-performance SUV, produced from 1991 to
1993 by GMC. The Typhoon was based on the 1991 GMC Jimmy. During
tests by Car and Driver, the Typhoon was capable of accelerating
from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, and could do a quarter-mile run in
14.1 seconds at 95 mph. Car and Driver compared the Typhoon's
performance favorably to the Ferrari 348ts, Chevrolet Corvette, and
Nissan 300ZX Turbo.
For consignment, a 1993 GMC Typhoon. Powered by 4.3 liters of V6
engine, with a TE-44 turbo and 3" downpipe help it along, as well
as some Machtech Company from California mods to this mill and
including Edelbrock shocks on all 4 corners. 1 of 1008 produced
with black on black in 1993, this one is well preserved.
Exterior
Looking much like a mild mannered GMC Jimmy save for the flared
rocker add ons, and blackened windows and trimmings, the only thing
giving it away was the Typhoon badging (replaced by 1992 style gray
stickers). Otherwise it could be your soccer mom everyday driver
retaining anonymous, going about its everyday business. Straight
steel, all black nice paint, and tinted windows with even a roof
rack keep up the secrecy. Darth Vader menacing indeed!
Interior
With enough black leather to cloak the entire entourage of the band
Whitesnake, leather buckets present upfront, and a rear fold down
bench with large cushy armrests are within a clean original
interior. A nice gray dash is fronting the passengers, and save for
some aftermarket "A" pillar mounted turbo boost and fuel pressure
monitoring gauges, its stock GM build. Clean black carpeting floods
the floors and a center console setup in between the buckets. An
AM/FM/CD (CD Changer in the rear) is within the dash, and this
truck has R134-A AC upgrade. A full array of factory gauges present
themselves in front of the driver and are backed up by a Momo
Steering wheel. An MSD boost controller hangs between the drivers
knees and has 4 adjustment points on it. Opening the console lid,
we find a toggle switch...electric exhaust cutouts to let the
Typhoon roar.
Drivetrain
The money shot off you will, within an all clean engine bay, with
no corrosion, we see a 4.3 liter Turbo V6 mill. The dyno sheet
provided with this Typhoon states it has 303 HP with 471ft/lbs
torque. Fast Fuel Injection provides the injection and all ECM
controls,a rebuilt 700R4 and upgraded 4-speed automatic is now
strapped on to the back of the engine. On the rear is a 3.73 posi
setup. A multitude of receipts are included to back up the rebuild
of the engine and transmission. TRW forged pistons reside within
the bores of the 4.3L V6 along with a Crower roller cam. The heads
have been ported, polished, had a 3 angle valve job completed, and
chromoly rocker studs and guide plates were installed. Billet
aluminum 1.5 ratio roller rockers control the valves and a ARP head
stud kit keeps all the boost where it belongs. A TE-44 turbo hangs
on the side of the engine and feeds 16lbs of boost, along with an
adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a high efficiency intercooler
and an external high flow wastegate.
Undercarriage
Just a slight bit of surface rust on the usual suspects, but an
upgraded aluminum driveshaft, and otherwise clean and rust-free
structure and underside. Power disc brakes with 6 piston calipers
are on front, and power drums for the rear. A stainless-steel
muffler system hangs underneath along with a high flow catalytic
converter. Edelbrock shocks on all 4 corners dampen the ride.
Drive-Ability
With it's evil black stare I slipped inside and was impressed by
the comfortable leather buckets. She fired right up and on the test
track it performed above my expectations. It definitely opened my
eyes, and woke me up when pressing the accelerator, as I did not
expect that! Great acceleration, smooth cruise, bias free panic
stopping, and firm positive shifting for the automatic. A/C was not
ice cold, and radio turned on but no functions were working at the
time of my test drive. Fun fun fun, a wolf in wolf's clothing if
you will.
If you're ready to become one of the elite Typhoon owners and join
the ranks of Clint Eastwood, John F. Kennedy Jr, and Bob Seger then
head on down to the Classic Auto Mall and make this black storm
your own. A rebuilt and upgraded engine, turbo system, transmission
this black beauty is ready to rock and roll. As a side note, the
towing capability of this truck is ZERO, the only thing it can haul
is ASS!!!
