High end, body off frame custom build. I drove this car home last
night and I've just given it a complete inspection. I suggest you
watch the video, I could write a book about how amazing this car
is. Fit, finish and function all score a 10!
EXTERIOR: The '50 Olds bubble coupe is a very handsome car that
lends well to becoming a hot rod. The low slung grill and a set of
fat wheels under those bulging rear fenders make a great look. This
can't be red paint, it must be red glass because that is what it
looks like. The body work is phenomenal. It's laser straight from
every angle. The panels are precision fit. The hood and lid have
had their trim removed and filled for a clean look. The jambs are
painted slick. Inside the fuel door is a billet filler plate. Every
piece of stainless was professionally polished and straightened.
The chrome was show plated. The glass is all new. Every rubber
gasket and weatherstrip is new. Great looking Boyd Coddington
wheels- 17s in front 18s in back, extra wide in back. It has
Goodyear F1 performance tires.
INTERIOR: Custom interior by Gabe. I'm sitting in the car right now
and I can't stress enough the quality and attention to detail. It
has leather upholstery on the comfortable bucket seats and rear
seat with armrest. Very tastefully done custom made side panels
including the kick panels. The headliner is very cool with the
Oldsmobile planet with rings symbol embossed into it. It also has a
wrinkled leather pattern in the middle with dome light and matching
visors. The center console is custom made and upholstered to match.
It features a very unique armrest. The Alpine stereo sounds great,
it has 10 speakers and an amp in the trunk. The interior metal is
painted as smooth and glossy as the outside. It has a very clean
dash. The wiper knob and a 12 volt receptacle are mounted below the
dash. There is a matched set of VDO gauges including a Quartz clock
in the factory location. There is a matched tachometer on the
console. The ratchet shifter has a custom made wood bezel and Von
Dutch ball. The tilt column is a brushed aluminum with a Budnick
custom wheel. Features include cruise control, power windows,
reclining seats, 3 point retractable seatbelts and cold a/c. There
are nice custom vents in the dash, under the dash, hidden behind
the speaker grill and even at the rear of the console. It has
premium carpet with matching floormats with bound edges. Something
else impressed me- everything fits so nice. There are no loose
parts, no corners popping up. It was done right.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Clean, tasteful show quality. It has a very
reliable, very powerful 5.7 LS6 Corvette motor. Runs smooth as can
be and I assure you that it will put you back in the seat if you
punch it! It has a set of headers, billet pulleys and a polished
air intake tube. A big aluminum radiator with electric fan and a
polished overflow keeps it cool. It has Vintage Air heat and a/c
system. Modern power steering with remote polished reservoir.
Stainless braided hoses, dipstick, throttle controls. The engine
bay is all smoothed out metal, it has custom made filler panels. It
is all painted glass finish red, latches are chrome.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Done with the same attention to detail as the
interior. It has been boxed and upholstered. Under the hand cut
carpet with bound edges are storahe compartments. The back wall has
a door, behind it is the battery with remote terminals and a shut
off switch. Even the bottom of the trunk lid is upholstered and it
also has the planet with the ring around it embossed. The trunk
opens with a lever under the driver seat, latches are chrome. i
UNDERSIDE: Upfront it has a new Heidts suspension with polished
tubular control arms, coilover shocks, rack and pinion steering
system. In back it has a 4-link suspension with chrome tubular
control arms and panhard bar, coilover adjustable shocks. Bottom of
the motor is polished aluminum, has a high torque starter. 4L60
overdrive automatic has a chrome pan. A custom made aluminum drive
shaft goes back to a Ford 9-inch rear end. Has a driveshaft safety
loop. Custom brake system with disc at all four wheels, has billet
calipers, stainless braided hoses, and an e-brake system. Power
brake boosters are under the car. The fuel system is custom with a
polished stainless steel tank, electric fuel pump and new fuel
lines. Really nicely built 3 inch stainless exhaust system with
premium clamps and polished tips. The entire bottom of the car is
painted the same red as on top. The chassis is painted gloss
black.
This restoration would easily cost $125,000 today. It was done
about 10 years ago and driven almost 10,000 miles. It looks like it
was done 1 year ago with 1,000 miles. That says it was done right
and really well cared for. It drove amazing. One hand on the wheel,
it steered, stopped and rode like a new car. I punched it once and
it lived up to it's Rocket 88 name!
