Vehicle Description
1990 Mazda Miata Convertible
We wanted to combine the reliability and quality of a Japanese car
with the excitement and emotion of an inexpensive, lightweight,
rear-drive convertible," says Bob Hall, product planning manager at
Mazda's Irvine, California, facility and one of the visionaries
behind the creation of the Miata. "The idea just seemed incredibly
logical to us." Happily, Mazda remained true to that idea.
For consignment, a 1 owner low mileage (22,064 original miles)
sports car that harkens back to the days of the Triumphs and MG's
but without the spots on the garage floor and with electrics that
actually work! Small car with powerful engine, CHECK! Right color
with convertible top, CHECK! Sporty interior with stick shifter,
CHECK! Optioned out with the "A" package, CHECK! Turn the key and
drive away with a smile on your face, CHECK...IT OUT!
Exterior
Classic Red bathes the curved hidden headlight panels on this
sports car. Small enough to be thrown around corners, and powerful
enough to be able to handle it, she's in low mileage form and well
cared for in rust free condition. Garaged all its life, our owner
lovingly cared for her even retaining its original tires. Round and
round she undulates as it forms the Miata which in German means
"prize" or "reward". A black convertible top in excellent
condition, with a clear rear plastic window, and aluminum alloy
wheels, and it is definitely a prize to be had, right out of our
halls and into your garage.
Interior
Opening the top reveals a nice black cloth high back dual bucket
interior passenger compartment. Everything is within arm's reach in
here, showing its original dash, leather wrapped steering wheel
which turns power assisted steering, and an AM/FM/Cassette stereo
with anti-theft coding. Black carpet covers the floors and of
course is in excellent condition. Let's go for a quick ride on a
curved back uninhabited road!
Drivetrain
Under the hood we see the original 1.6-liter 4-cylinder power plant
with EFI. A 5-speed manual transmission is on back, and all is well
preserved under here. Just a slight bit of corrosion on the cast
aluminum parts, but all else is near perfect. A 4.30 rear axle
helps get it on with a press of the accelerator. Zoom, zoom, zoom
as Mazda says.
Undercarriage
Up on our lift we note some slight surface rust but certainly no
invasive rust and all structurally sound unibody construction well
sorted and sported out. Rear wheel drive with independent coil
springs all over and power discs on all 4 corners. Nice floorpans
and rockers and no real oil leaks to speak of so the garage floor
will remain clean.
Drive-Ability
Slipping inside I had shades of doing the same in my TR-6. Although
this car assured me it was going to start! While the car starts and
idles fine when driving there is a distinctive miss and it needs a
major tune up as the consigner also stated, and the A/C will need a
redux and a change over to the new refrigerant. All else was
working perfectly.
A reliable sports car, no drips, just fun and low mileage so it can
be enjoyed for a long time by the new owner. Spend a little time
and money on a good tune up, and maybe do the A/C, but you always
have the convertible top to lower so it's not a must. A real nice
example and definitely keeping in tune with its namesake as a
"prize!"
