Now, for something completely different... an American car made in England that bucked the 'bigger is better' trend of the latter half of the 1950's. The Nash Metropolitan was marketed not as a family car, not as a sports car, not even as an economy car. It was simply offered up as a fun second car. Mission accomplished.
This Series One, 1954 Metropolitan Coupe was restored some years ago to a high standard and driven very little since. In fact it was only recently rescued and put back on the road after nearly a decade of storage following its owner's death and subsequent legal wranglings over his estate and rather impressive collection of classic cars. The 1.2 liter OHV inline four cylinder engine supplied by Austin Motorcars is believed original, although it has been fitted with a Weber replacement carburetor. It's original three speed was replaced with a smooth shifting floor mounted 4-speed manual transmission.
Finished in a stunning two tone electric blue metallic and bright white exterior it is accented by chrome bumpers and grille, fender mounted mirrors and of course its signature continental spare wheel carrier. All in excellent condition. The fanciful blue and white interior continues the theme inside. This car has collected a few nicks during its time stored in close quarters but it is rust free and still presents extraordinarily well. Easily up for collecting trophies at any local or regional car show; always a crowd favorite.
Despite its tiny proportions its actually quite pleasant to ride around in. The interior is simple and airy with big windows all around. With the pull of the starter knob the little Metro fires right up. Its 52 horsepower motor won't win many races but it had no problem out running a '54 VW Beetle. It keeps up with around town traffic, it shifts, steers and stops as it should. Everything is in working order on this very nice example; it is ready to show and go.
