- Attractive older restoration
- Elegant Folkstone Gray finish
- The most desirable style from an iconic model year
The 1939 Fords boasted 24-stud cylinder heads and long-awaited
hydraulic brakes, as well as several important design evolutions.
The headlights migrated to the peaks of the front fenders, still
under Ford's handsome teardrop aerodynamic glass covers, inspired
by the upmarket stablemate Lincoln-Zephyr. Further, the hood thrust
forward with a low vee-shaped grille with vertical bars that
suggested the bow of a fast boat cutting through waves. The wider
and lower grille aided engine cooling and gave the designers the
latitude to eliminate the hood side vents. All this resulted in a
more aerodynamic- and dramatic-looking automobile, which truly
looked more expensive than it was - making it quite a sales
success.
The DeLuxe convertible coupe offered here is an ideal example of
this classic design in its most desirable body style. It is
finished in the year-correct color of Folkstone Gray, a wonderful
understated choice, with a complementary rich brown leather
interior and black cloth top. Additional features include chromed
wheel covers and rear fender skirts, providing a truly sporty
appearance, while a full-size spare is tucked behind the seats.
Overall the restoration shows some patina throughout, including
minor staining to the convertible top and stretching of the seats,
but it is nicely mellowed and ideal for summer time cruising.
In sum, the 1939 Ford is an American classic, and this example is
exactly the '39 Ford one envisions - a convertible coupe, in iconic
colors, ready for driving enjoyment through the last months of
summer and into the fall ahead. To view this car and others
