The Pontiac Firebird is one of the most famous and certainly one of the most recognizable GM sports/muscle cars ever produced. Introduced in 1967, alongside its Chevrolet counterpart the Camaro, the Firebird was an instant hit with the public. It was later, in its second generation Trans Am form, that it would really become iconic. Having the star role in the movie "Smokey and the Bandit," the Firebird Trans Am became one of the most famous movie cars of all time. Besides having this iconic role, the Trans Am was really the only remaining true performance muscle car in this time period. Even with all of the smog regulations put in place these cars really packed a punch in the performance department. A stock Trans Am had either the 350 cubic inch V8 or the bulletproof 6.6 liter 400 cubic inch V8 with a shaker hood putting out 180 horsepower. Most were ordered with an automatic transmission. But this was not the end all in performance for the Trans Am; there was something else that put the black and gold Smokey and the Bandit car to shame, and that's the Trans Am MACHO T/A offered by Dennis and Kyle Mecham through their dealership in Arizona beginning in 1977 and later through other Pontiac dealers throughout the U.S.
The recipe for the Macho T/A was straightforward: DKM would purchase new Trans Ams, perform its modifications, and resell them as used cars to Pontiac dealers. Under the hood, DKM would richen the jetting of the stock Quadrajet and change the distributor's curve to bring in 36 degrees of advance at 2,500 rpm. DKM also opened up the sealed shaker hood scoop, increasing airflow to the stock airbox, and installed a screen over the opening. A set of off-the-shelf Hooker Headers were bolted up and plumbed up with a 2.5-inch dual exhaust with a crossover tube and two catalytic converters eliminating the restrictive stock system. Horsepower was bumped to 225 HP with the new modifications.
Offered here is an outstanding example of the very rare Macho T/A, #104 of the 204 produced. A very highly optioned car finished in its original Starlite black exterior and black interior and equipped with power steering, windows, brakes and door locks. An original L78 car with the big 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8, with all of its original Mecham upgrades of course, paired with its original Borg Warner 4 speed transmission. It was also ordered with the WS6 performance package, F41 suspension and code G80 positraction rear axle ratio with 3.42 ratio. This is a fantastic car that has been well maintained over the years and is offered with the original build sheet and Mecham letter of authenticity. Still retaining its near perfect original deluxe upholstery and the exterior cosmetics being finished to a very high standard, it's just stunning. Mechanically it runs and drives extremely well. If you are looking for the best Trans AM on the planet, then this is the car for you!
