I'm a racing dog. Jack Roush, 2004 Across a number of racing series, Jack Roush has been the force behind just about as many wins as anyone could want. Though highly successful with total winnings exceeding $400 million across a number of racing series including ARCA and Gander Outdoor Truck, Jack is probably best known as the fedora-wearing presence in the NASCAR pits over his 33 years of competition. Legendary drivers Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray, and David Ragan have all posted wins in Roush-prepared Cup cars. In the late 1990's, akin to Carroll Shelby's relationship, Roush partnered with Ford to manufacture aftermarket parts for the Mustang, installed by authorized dealers or selected third parties. In 1997 the business model changed with all performance modifications for Mustangs being engineered and custom-installed by Roush at its Michigan headquarters. The first generation Roush Mustangs were available for just two years: 1997 and 1998. The black-on-black 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra Roush Stage 3 offered here is one of the first-year, first-generation cars. The Stage 3 designation designated cars with the most extensive performance enhancements. This car was originally delivered by Battle Creek Ford to an owner intent on keeping the car un-driven as an investment. After nearly three years of ownership, he sold the car with just 20 miles showing on the odometer. In contrast, the only other owner of the Mustang was a true driver who added 34,060 miles over the ensuing 20 years (or just over 1,500 miles per year on average). The car's condition is evidence of the excellent care and stewardship he gave the car over that time. There's an appropriate, slightly sinister look to any all-black performance car. One adorned with as many Cobra emblems as this Mustang certainly wears the color well. The exterior paint overall is in excellent condition. The many body enhancements added by Roush are all present, each bringing its distinctiveness, but without any loud or uncharacteristic design interruptions. The Roush respect for the Mustang design is evident throughout. Good examples are the side-exit exhausts emanating from the added lower-body aero sills, the brake-cooling openings ahead of the rear wheels, the rear-deck aero spoiler, and the aero rear valance. The five-spoke alloy wheels are also unique to the Roush cars and wear their subtle branding well. Up front, the single Cobra emblem centered in the grille is a focal point, as are the two functional scoops on the raised-cowl hood. Inside, more tasty Roush enhancements await. White-faced performance analog instruments, including the a-pillar-mounted boost and fuel-pressure gauges, provide comprehensive monitoring. The ivory-white 5-speed shifter-knob is the other non-black touch. Black leather seating surfaces are in excellent condition with only the driver's seat showing mileage-appropriate patina. A factory-installed Ford Mach 460 audio system is in place. Black carpeting and matching Roush Performance-branded carpet mats are in excellent condition. Under the hood, the soul of the Roush Stage III, the 4.6-liter V8, crowned with its supercharger, wears a dominant forged three-dimensional Cobra logo. The car's Roush build-date of October 1, 1987 is recorded on the vehicle Vin/ID tag. Throughout the engine compar
