Powered by Mercedes-Benz's venerable M100 6.3-liter engine, the 300
SEL was certainly worthy of the three-pointed star. It was an
engine born and bred on the racetrack and is still considered one
of the finest Mercedes-Benz engines of all time. The 6.3-liter V-8
was able to get the substantial 300 SEL to a top speed of over 130
mph and sprint to 60 in less than seven seconds, an extraordinary
feat for a luxury sedan in 1970 and still respectable today.
Adorned with the finest luxury fitments of the time, the 300 SEL
was for those who sought the finest in automotive refinement.
This example, finished in Tunis Beige Metallic over a Cognac
interior, continues to present extremely well. The beautiful
exterior and original interior support the fact that this
well-preserved example has covered just under 26,700 original miles
in its five decades on the road, a remarkable achievement.
Recognizing its importance, the car was awarded the Silver Star
Certificate by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America at the 2019 Red
River Concours d'Elegance. As if its stellar condition was not
enough, the car is accompanied by a host of accessories including
its original owner's manual, tool kit, owner's service and warranty
booklet, Becker radio manual, and more.
More recently, the SEL has benefited from a thorough service
including the replacement of the engine and transmission mounts.
Further, the current owner notes the excellent status of the air
conditioning as well as the air suspension. One would be hard
pressed to find a more complete example, a must-have for the
discerning Mercedes-Benz enthusiast.
