For Sale: 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL in Bal harbour, Florida

Vehicle Description

This 1970 Mercedes Benz 280 SL (W113) was purchased by its first owner on 7 November 1969 in the island of Maui, Hawaii. In 2008 the car was placed in storage in Kihei, Maui, until sold in 2012 to a private collector in California. According to title, the odometer was then 30,906 miles. In 2015 the car was purchased by its current owner and taken to Florida.

In April 2015 Pierre Hedary performed a complete engine electrical system and engine cooling system overhaul at his shop in Titusville, Florida. The electrical overhaul included new distributor points and capacitor, new spark plugs and spark plug cables, new resistances, new battery, new battery to starter cables and new alternator. The cooling system overhaul included a system flush, a new radiator and radiator shroud, new cooling system hoses, thermostat, temp sensor and fan clutch. Needless to say, all new parts were OEM Mercedes Benz. At this time, an electric fan was installed in front of the radiator to help keep the engine from overheating in the hot Florida weather.

New Coker “Phoenix” tires were installed in April 2015.

From September 2015 to May 2016 the car underwent a major restoration at Fabulous Restorations in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at a cost of $60,000. This restoration, that included the replacement of several parts of chassis the undercarriage, rocker panels and trunk floor, was performed by metalsmith Tahi Zedraz.  (All sheet metal used to replace damaged parts was original Mercedes Benz) and a new carpet in the original boucle design and the correct color from Klaus Hermann Mayer in Germany was installed. All body, windshield and door rubber gaskets and seals were replaced during this restoration.

A complete overhaul of the rear drive train support system, the fuel and brake systems and the shift lever mechanism (provided by SL- Tech, Arundel, Maine) were performed at this time. New fuel hoses were installed at this time. A new brake master cylinder, brake lines and hoses were part of the restoration. The fuel tank was removed, cleaned, repainted and replaced. Doors were disassembled, window mechanisms cleaned and greased and new water barriers installed behind door inside panels.

Detailed photos of this restoration were taken and will be handed over to the new owner together with the detailed file of the restoration process and invoices.

The car features a Frigiking AC with an original York compressor and compressor bracket.

Last tune up was performed by Hedary in mid 2019.

A new battery, new brake calipers and brake pads were installed in 2019.

The car is powered by a six in line engine coupled to a manual 4 shift gearbox. It stars, idles, run and drives like new.

To note:

The dashboard louver control lever does not work.

The right reverse white light does not light up when gear placed in reverse.

The Becker radio does not work.

The body paint is faulty at several spots.

The AC is currently not working.

The car is offered with its owner´s handbook, complete tool set data card. The sale includes the original hard top and a hard top stand.
