To give full credit to Automotive Writer Tony Miller, the following
story was published with photos in a five-page spread after an
interview. Together with the pictures and video we took and show
here, we think Tony's story will help you know that this very cool
'39 Coupe is right for you.
It's pretty clear that the Second Age of the Resto Rod is upon us.
As our favorite old cars fade further into the past, they seem to
get better looking - especially when they're really virginal, and
look like they did when they were new. Increasingly, we're seeing
really nice rods and customs that are almost completely
stock-bodied.
Bob grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, within a bicycle ride of the
famous Woodward Avenue. He's been addicted to hot rods all his life
and continues to indulge his habit with a number of modified and
old-school rides. His 39' coupe is authentically detailed as a car
that a young man of limited means might have driven in the early
'50s, and he intends to keep it exactly as it is. He likes to drive
it, rain or shine and shows it infrequently. He reports that it's a
completely reliable ride, equally suitable for a trip to the
hardware store or out Highway 66 to the West Coast. And as for us,
we can just admire this neat old Ford for all its original beauty,
tweaked just a little bit for the hint of menace that its long-ago
owner would have displayed with pride.
Fifty years ago, most hot rod guys thought that a 39' Ford was a
second choice to a 40' Deluxe. In recent years that has changed,
though, and many now consider the 39' Deluxe and 40' Standard their
favorite fat-fendered Fords. Not a surprise, then, to learn that
Bob Gregorie, the head of Ford Design from 1931 to 1946, had two
39's in his personal collection, many years after they were
obsolete. He knew a good thing when he created it!
[This is] a 39' Coupe with all of the goodness that it has when it
was fresh baked, with just a little hot rod seasoning added. The
body is bone stock and painted original black, and the details like
chrome and glass are either good original or restored to factory
appearance. It has a more aggressive stance than a stock Ford,
thanks to a dropped axle and the rubber rake provided by 500- and
600-16 WWW Firestones. [The choice was made] to leave off the
hubcaps, [and run] skinny beauty rings, chrome lug nuts, and nicely
detail and paint the wide-5 rims and drums. Blue dot taillights and
discreet dual exhausts are about the only other departure from
bone-stockness.
In the interior, we find the original-style mohair upholstery,
rubber floor mats, and Ford instruments. An authentic Indian
blanket covers the front Seat in vintage teenage fashion, and a few
auxiliary gauges keep [you] informed regarding revs, amps, and
temperature.
Under the hood beats the coupe's hot rod heart. A later flathead
has been cosmetically detailed with a smoothed block, polished
Edelbrock heads and manifold, and Fenton headers. The alternator is
disguised as a generator, and all the other electrics are period
correct: cloth insulated wires and original-style regulator. The
battery, heater hoses, and horn have been moved out of the engine
bay for a clean appearance.
A stock 39' transmission transmits the power to a Columbia 2-speed
rear end, making the coupe a comfortable and quiet highway cruiser.
When [you choose, you] can interrupt the solitude with a completely
concealed high-tech sound system, incorporating satellite radio and
iPod connectivity.
