Vehicle Description
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer this 1950 Studebaker Commander
for your consideration. For the 1950 year, the Commander was
powered by a 246ci L-Head 6-cylinder which was mated to a 3-speed
column-mounted manual transmission. Power is sent to the rear
wheels which were a reported 102 horsepower in 1950. The engine
does run, but has a fairly noticeable knock internally. The engine
is rebuild able and is a great project for someone. The car will
have to be trailer-ed away from our facility.
This example has remained in a highly original condition wearing a
coat of burgundy paint over a burgundy cloth interior. The interior
also features a black dashboard with chrome trim and a tan
headliner. Overall the car is in good conditioning despite showing
some imperfections in the paint. Some cool features on this example
feature a front exterior sun visor and suicide doors.
Styling of the new Studebaker Commander was executed mainly at
Raymond Loewy's studios, with much of the work was actually
accomplished by Virgil Exner. The car's appearance was stunning and
somewhat polarizing, and the Starlight coupe's large four-part
wrap-around rear window in particular so closely resembled a front
windshield that comedians wondered aloud if the car was coming or
going. Nonetheless, the design was futuristic and proved to be
influential as the rest of the American auto industry was forced to
play catch-up. While some criticized the "bullet nose" look as
well, it didn't seem to bother buyers as sales remained high. Today
these cars are not easy to find making them rare, easy to maintain,
and certainly something that sticks out of the pack. Please call or
email today with any questions or for additional information.
