Vehicle Description
1947 Ford Convertible
Cruising is a social activity that primarily consists of driving a
car. Cruising can be an expression of the freedom of possessing a
driver's license. Cruising is distinguished from regular driving by
the social and recreational nature of the activity, which is
characterized by an impulsively random, often aimless course. A
popular route (or "strip") is often the focus of cruising. "Cruise
nights" are evenings during which cars drive slowly. A cruise can
be a meeting of car enthusiasts at a predetermined location,
organized predominantly through the internet (in recent times) but
also largely through mobile phone, word of mouth or simply by a
cruise being established enough that it becomes a regular
event.
A shout out to our consigner, whose husband has had several hand
builds come through the Classic Auto Mall, courtesy his wife and
our consigner. All the builds were top quality, had specific
standards that her former husband builder/restorer used for every
car (302/C4 combo, truck wheels because he did not like cleaning
wheels, meticulous attention to detail, great paint, and even
naming a few of his creations). Alas, this is the final bow of his
collection, and this one is his crowning achievement. A close look
at the photos will reveal this, and certainly a standing ovation to
all his creations that are all since sold, and this one is destined
to do the same quickly.
Exterior
Bathed in pristine deep black, you could just dive in and go for a
scuba adventure in this paint. All the trimmings are nicely
restored to their original chromed glory, and all glass and even
the canvas top are near perfect. A split front windshield, dual
search lights (another common feature of this restorer/builder)
well minded gaps, and rounded fenders abound. A rear glass window
is within the convertible, and it's up and down was a breeze
(particularly when it is put down!) The standard truck wheels are
pretty much self cleaning, so no hours on your knees polishing
necessary. See, there was a method to his madness!
Interior
Black vinyl with white stitching in vertical tuck and roll format
covers the door panels. Shiny chromed cranks and handles abound,
and preview what is to grace your eyes before you slip inside.
Doing so reveals a very shiny black and chromed dash, complete with
dual round large gauges flanking a central ribbed chromed speaker
cover, and new radio below. New white faced gauges are in front of
the steering wheel, which has retained its originality, and has a
beautiful chromed horn ring in the center. Under the dash is a new
painted and chrome edged heater box, some extra billet machined
aluminum knobs. A long handled Lokar shift lever with machined top
knob (another standard feature of this consigner/builder) now
actuates the automatic transmission. Seats are finely recovered in
overstuffed leather and present in bucket form in front. The
driver's seat has power movements. A rear bench complete with
armrest stretches across the back and shows some early signs of
light mold on the surface. Black carpet covers the floors, and with
all the vertical stitching between the folds, and vertical chrome
trimmings on the dash, this interior presents a a finely tailored
Zoot Suit.
Drivetrain
A 302ci V8 with 4-barrel carburetor and chromed round Ford air
cleaner on top, is in the restored engine bay. A painted blue
block, and ribbed Cobra valve covers (another standard for the
builder) is seen under the hood. A C4 3 speed automatic
transmission is on back.
Undercarriage
All underneath has been painstakingly resorted, nicely painted
black, no rust and all has had the once over. Leaf spring
suspension for the rear, and a transverse leaf spring front
suspension is working just flawlessly. Drum brakes are all around
and glass pack style exhaust is in dual presentation, snaking its
way rearward to chromed tips.
Drive-Ability
As with all the cars we have had the pleasure to adorn our halls,
and I have had the pleasure to drive them all, this one fired right
up, and was off with a whoosh. It handles just fab, accelerates as
one would expect, and handles fine. The top down, radio on and
cruising in the sun. I was just like a 1940's gangster rolling down
the highway with ease and style.
A big thanks to our consigner's wife, who I'm sure had mixed
emotions when liquidating all her former husband's hard work, but I
can say he was consistent, and had a knack for the good build. This
is his last hurrah, so get on down to Classic Auto Mall, and snap
this stylish restoration up, you will not be able to replicate this
build with what it costs to purchase this car. Drumroll and
standing ovation please!
