1974 VW Thing
Car History
The Volkswagen Type 181 is a two-wheel drive, four-door,
convertible, manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 1968 to
1983. The U.S. version was called the "Thing" while in Germany it
is called a Kurierwagen, in the UK it is known as the "Trekker", in
the South America it is called the "Safari". While it is called
many things around the globe, it is unmistakably known by all VW
enthusiasts & fans of the manufacturer.
We have a great green 1974 VW Thing here at Adventure Classics that
has a lot of originality with a few modification thrown in to
upgrade the ride and handling too.
Engine & Drivetrain
Ours appears to have the original VW 1776cc 4-cylinder engine that
has been modified with chrome air cleaners on its dual carburetors,
chrome engine compartment pan, a custom under the bumper set of
long tube headers and exhaust, and is paired to a 4-speed manual
transmission.
It rides on upgraded 17" and 18" Corvette 5-spoke chrome mag wheels
and wider performance black wall tires.
Interior
The interior has high-back front bucket seats and matching rear
seat and has room to fit 4 adults comfortably with lots of leg
room. Behind the rear seat is extra room for storage for a cooler
down the beach or your passenger's bags.
It also has a beautiful full chrome roll cage, EMPI floor shifter,
as well as a great Pioneer Stereo System to belt out some tunes
while you are cruising.
Exterior
This Thing is painted in a dark green paint job and the body is
straight and true with all doors lining up correctly and open &
close properly too. It has the removeable full top that looks nice
with the with side curtains.
The exterior lenses, bumpers, trim, and emblems are also in good
condition.
Conclusion
This green 1974 VW Thing we have here at Adventure Classics looks
cool and you can't find many of these on the roads today that are
in this condition.
