Arguably the most iconic automobile ever produced, the classic air cooled Porsche 911 is many things. It is at the same time exotic and practical, sporty and economical, precision engineered and elegantly simple, its serious and playful, handsome and cute. It is also one of the most rewarding cars to own, both for the way it drives and for the way it steadily increases in value.
Another of the great legacies of the 911 is the wide ranging color palette that they were finished in. The greens and blues have always been among the most coveted by collectors and this example, a 1982 911SC Targa wears the rare and stunning Minerva Blue Metallic. This car was refinished some years ago, but to a very high standard and other than a few well earned road chips presents extremely well. Rust free, thanks to its California/Texas ownership history it is in overall excellent cosmetic condition inside and out. The leather covered dash is flawless as are the leather seats. The Targa top has also been restored in recent years. The pictures speak for themselves.
Mechanically the car has seen no expense spared in maintenance and upkeep. The 3.0 liter flat six is healthy with a recent leakdown showing less than 7% across all six cylinders, compression averaging better than 160psi. The 5-speed gearbox shifts smoothly by 915 standards and the clutch has great modulation and uptake. The brakes are fresh and strong. Tires fitted in 2017 are better than 80%. The car rolls down the road straight and true and of course accelerates, steers and stops like a Porsche should. The features and accessories including a great sounding stereo system are all in working order, although the 134 converted AC system requires a seasonal charge to blow cold.
The classic Porsche Targa provides a versatile and satisfying road going experience. The cabin is calm and quiet compared to a cabriolet and the chassis only fractionally less stiff than the coupe. Top off cruising is a joy and gives you full access to the symphony in flat 6. Of course what all classic Porsches share is the utterly analog driving experience, few cars connect driver to road more directly than a 911; I like to say you don't just drive them, you dance with them.
This example has 144k miles on the chassis, but fear not the high mileage 911. These cars are built to last; they are made of robust materials and are simple by design. I have owned several on either side of 200k miles and am proud to report that one of the strongest 3.2 Carreras I have ever driven is rolling with 302k on the clock! Don't try that in a Ferrari. This 911SC is much fresher than its years and miles suggest, it is good to go for many more to come.
Classic Porsche 911's are among the most reliable investments, not just in the car market but in general. The acquisition cost keeps rising but so long as it is taken care of, it can still be driven and enjoyed regularly and should the time come to sell it you are unlikely to ever lose money on it.
