For Sale: 1963 Crofton Bug in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
And now for something a little different -- with emphasis on
"little." What may appear to be a scale Jeep or toy replica is
actually a real Crofton Brawny Bug. A closer look reveals that this
is a serious machine. And different meaning rare. Only about 250 of
these were built, and far fewer remain. 1963 was the last year of
regular production. They were built well, as the Bug was designed
as a farm utility vehicle, and as such it's a rugged little beast.
It sports a serious drivetrain too. With the Brawny Bug came a 53
cubic inch Crosley inline four -- 9 cubes bigger than the standard
Bug and 10 more horses or 45 horsepower. (A 28% increase!) The
engine is well detailed and looks great. Although it's 2-wheel
drive, you'll notice two shifters on the floor. The auxiliary
2-speed unit turns the 3-speed manual into a 6-speed -- with 2
speeds in reverse! The rear end is a rugged (can we say brawny?)
Powr-Lok unit for sure footed traction. With only 1100 pounds to
move, this drivetrain provides spritely performance and a top speed
of about 50 mph. The interior is very tidy with a speedometer, oil
pressure gauge, temp gauge, and a custom steering wheel. The black
bucket seats are handsome, comfortable, and low-maintenance. After
a day of work or play you can just spray the interior with a hose.
The bright red body is set off by chrome wheels all around with
beefy 26x9.00R14 Quadboss tires. (That translates to 225/65R14 for
non off-road types.) The original wheels and 7.50x10 Goodyears come
with it as well. This Bug is fully restored and presents as new.
Right down to the flash on the tires. Your kids will imagine all
kinds of adventures just sitting still, but the Bug will bring out
the kid in anyone. It's titled and completely street legal just
like any car or truck. It doesn't take much imagination to come up
with tons of ways to use and have fun with this amazing Crofton
Brawny Bug.
