In 1987, the Esprit was restyled by British designer Peter Stevens,
also known for the McLaren F1. The X180's exterior changes were
accompanied by a redesign of the interior that gave more space to
the occupants. The major leap forward came in mid-1989, when Lotus
finally made a charge-cooled engine available. The 'Eagle' chassis
was standardized on all Esprits at this time, but the derivative
with the 264bhp charge-cooled engine became the Turbo SE (Special
Equipment). The SE not only had far more performance, which was
remarkable by any standard and equal to the performance of the
Porsche 911 Turbo of the period, but there had been further changes
to the aerodynamics. At the front there was a deeper front 'bib'
spoiler, the sills and their associated air intakes to the engine
bay had been reprofiled and, for the first time on an Esprit, there
was a small free-standing spoiler on the tail. Air conditioning and
a tilt/removable glass sunroof were also standard.
According to Lotus Archives and Lotus Certificate of Provenance,
chassis number 60194 was completed on the 7th of November 1990 as
the "Pilot Prototype" of the Jim Clark Indianapolis Special Edition
- commemorating the 25th Anniversary of his Indianapolis 500
victory in 1965. Ultimately, the Special Edition was limited to
just 20 individually numbered examples, of which few ever change
hands. A small brass dash plaque signifies the prototype status of
this particular car. This 1 of 1 example varies slightly from the
numbered cars and can be identified by the extra yellow finishes on
the exterior body. Lotus cars USA initially used the prototype for
demo service, later selling it to Carolina Motor Cars of Charlotte,
North Carolina in December 1990 with 1500 recorded miles. The
Esprit was sold "new" to a local resident at a sticker price of
$89,995 - as verified by a copy of the original window sticker on
file.
It's said the Lotus resided in Southern California and Scottsdale,
Arizona for many years of its life, while thoughtfully preserved as
original with occasional use and regular upkeep. The exterior's
glossy Lotus New Racing Green (A65) paintwork remains largely
original, with a recent refreshening to the front lower nose and
skirts - while the cabin displays nice, supple original Special
Gold leather and Sand upholstery in factory configuration. Typical
lacquer/laminate cracking is visible on the wooden instrument
cluster, but has been retained as original. Factory decals can be
seen on the rear glass, door jambs, and tidy front and rear
compartments.
The Espirit's 2.2 liter Turbocharged engine performs beautifully.
Notable services performed within the last five years, include a
major timing belt service, suspension, A/C, and electrical work.
While most recently, a Spring 2020 inspection and scheduled service
included an oil and filter change, air conditioning recharge,
battery, and restoration of the speedometer by Palo Alto
Speedometer. All electronics and safety equipment are in proper
operating order, with a current mileage of 37,700.
The Esprit SE is further supported by its original Owner's
Handbook, keys, Carfax and AutoCheck reports, and recent service
invoices. Available now for worldwide purchase and delivery from
our Houston, Texas showroom, DriverSource offers this
