Only such a superb automobile as this can be truly worthy of its connection with the legend of the Blue Train Bentley, one of the great stories of automotive lore.

Perhaps the most storied model in Bentley's celebrated history, the Speed Six earned lasting fame when it won an impromptu race on March 13, 1930, against the famous Le Train Bleu, a luxury express that plied the route between Cannes and Calais in France. For years it was believed that the Bentley in question was the Speed Six Coupe with custom Gurney-Nutting coachwork owned by millionaire playboy Woolf Barnato, one of the most colorful characters of the time; in fact, it was actually a Mulliner-bodied 1929 Speed Six, a car Barnato had owned for a year and was still driving while awaiting the completion of the Gurney-Nutting 1930 Speed Six. But legends, it is said, are best left as legends, and the Blue Train Bentley legend persists on the strength of Captain Barnato's exploits and the sheer imposing beauty of his fabulous streamlined coupe.

Heir to the Kimberly diamond mines in South Africa, one of the original “Bentley Boys,” a three-time Le Mans winner and then Bentley's chairman, Barnato and his companion, amateur golfer Dale Bourne, left the Carlton Bar in Cannes and set off in in Barnato's Speed Six coupe as Le Train Bleu left the Cannes railway station at 5:45 p.m. Despite rain, fog, trouble finding the location of their pre-arranged refuelling stop and having to use the only available spare tire, Barnato and Bourne arrived in Calais at 10:30 a.m. the next day. They had traveled more than 570 miles at an average speed of 43.43 MPH, an extraordinary feat on the rudimentary roads of the time. But the pair were not finished; their margin of victory was so wide that they then crossed the Channel on a steamer and drove another 700 miles to London, arriving at the Conservative Club on St. James' Street four minutes before the Blue Train pulled into the station in Calais.
