Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1966 Triumph TR4a. This
TR4's long-term owner initially purchased the car in 1970, sold it
to a friend in the mid-70s, then bought it back in 1986. He drove
it for a while before he began the process of a long-term,
extensive restoration. After his passing a few years ago halfway
through the project, the late owner's son brought the car to where
it is today - mechanically sorted, mostly finished, quite
roadworthy, and with a number of nice upgrades that his father had
planned to complete.
This is a performance-oriented build with road rally and touring
events in mind. The frame-off restoration included an engine
rebuild with oversized pistons, street performance cam, tri-metal
bearings, Weber 40DCOE sidedraft carburetors, sport exhaust and 123
electronic ignition. All new wiring was installed along with an
upgraded cooling system with an aluminum radiator and electric
cooling fan. New brakes, transmission rebuild, clutch, rear end -
the list goes on. The frame was gusseted and reinforced - upgraded
street performance suspension and bushing are installed.
This 4A was painted in 2014 in Ecurie Ecosse Blue; finish quality
is good overall but there is some paint lifting in the beltline
seam. All new rubbers; nicely detailed underneath, in the boot and
under the bonnet. A new interior kit was fitted and Miata seats
were upholstered to match; original seats are included. It has a
harness bar installed with five-point harnesses. Michelin tires are
mounted on factory steel wheels.
This TR4 drives great - it's a much stronger performer than a stock
example, and it has a tight and fresh feel to it. It requires some
patience on a cold start as the Webers don't have chokes, and it's
fairly loud so you aren't going to sneak it out of the driveway.
But get it out on a twisty road and it comes alive with a nice
torque curve, plenty of power and a very balanced feel. It is ready
for your finishing touches - the plan was for some driving lights
on the front bar, a rear bumper (one is included, needs brackets),
a headliner for the Surrey top; it also needs the wiper motor
(included) installed and a few other "button up" items. This is an
overdrive car, however it only works intermittently.
This is a well-done car that couldn't be replicated for close to
the asking price and an excellent opportunity for the enthusiast to
put his choice of finishing touches on it over the course of a few
weekends. Stacks of receipts, restoration photos, some spares and a
Heritage Trust certificate are included.
