Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1970 Oldsmobile 442, a
nicely-restored numbers-matching example with ownership history to
new. Finished in its original color of Sherwood Green metallic,
this car underwent a photo-documented frame-off restoration in
2009. It presents to a nice driver standard with only a few minor
flaws but no known rust. Highly optioned with factory A/C,
eight-track stereo, Hurst dual-gate shifter and more (see image of
original window sticker for details). The OAI ram air hood was
dealer installed early in the car's life by its first owner.
Interior was restored with correct materials and maintains an
as-delivered appearance, aside from a four-spoke sport steering
wheel in place of the original "deluxe" steering wheel (which is
included in a box along with the sale). Rally-pac gauges are clear
and working with the exception of the clock (the tach works fine);
eight-track stereo plays fine (Rolling Stones tape included) and
the factory A/C has been converted to R134a and blows cold. Nice
dash, carpets, door panels, seat upholstery and headliner. Separate
lap and shoulder belts are a bit cumbersome but work as well as
they ever did - this was before the era of three-point
retractor-wheel seat belts in American cars. And the sports console
with Hurst dual-gate shifter is about the coolest thing ever.
Under the hood is the original, numbers-matching 455 cubic inch
"Rocket" V8 mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission. The
engine was rebuilt in 2009 approximately 10,000 miles ago (bored
.030 over, new pistons, roller rockers, Elgin lifters, Comp cam,
etc) - the tune is ever so slightly more aggressive than stock, but
it maintains a very smooth idle and excellent power delivery across
the rev range. An aluminum intake is fitted to save weight but the
original cast iron manifold is included with the sale. Steering,
braking and suspension components were also fully refreshed during
the restoration 10,000 miles ago. This 442 runs and drives great
and feels very "put together" - certainly one of the best-driving A
bodies we've encountered, and more interesting than a Chevelle, GTO
or Buick GS. Even with the 12-bolt posi 3.23 rear end, this 442 has
no problem breaking loose the tires in first gear (and coming in
with another chirp when it hits second).
Same owner since 2011 (the fifth owner from new and only the second
since restoration) is downsizing. Original owner's manual, build
sheet, window sticker, ownership history to new and complete
restoration records (with photos) are included with the sale. For
