Vehicle Description
1953 Jeep CJ3 4x4 Custom Built Street Legal Historic Racer. Up for
sale is an amazing custom-built street legal former sand drag
racing Jeep with local West Coast winning race history. The Jeep
(and another mid-engined version) was purpose-built in the 1970's
by a local racing legend to go to Bakersfield, California and show
the local big boys what the local 'Little Guys' could do. The build
features top-level components and craftsmanship throughout. The
chassis began with a CJ5 frame, 'Swiss Cheese' lightened from front
to back. The wheel base has been altered to push the front axle out
further forward for high-speed stability. The Dana 44 axles are
narrowed, pro-built with Henry's axles, 5.38 gears, and Detroit
locker differentials. As raced, it was (is) powered by a 1969 Ford
Boss 302 race engine, and Liberty-modified Ford Toploader
transmission. To be clear, I'm keeping the engine and selling the
Jeep otherwise complete. The car-geared Toploader transmission
features a race clutch, Liberty-modified 2nd gear synchro
(clutch-less shifting into second), 4th gear overdrive, Hurst
racing shifter and linkage, etc. The wheels are machined Torque
Thrust 15 x 10's mounted with brand-new Super Swamper Bogger tires.
An under-chassis aluminum fuel cell resides out back. Custom
features abound, including a full professional roll cage, plumbed
into the Jeep's heating system to provide a defrost/window feature,
custom tail lamps and marker lamps, custom aluminum bumpers, full
custom soft top, light weight fiberglass bucket seats and rear
bench seat, a polished steering column, a full compliment of
Stewart Warner vintage gauges, hydraulic locking parking brake,
full street-legal lighting, brake lights, turn signals, etc. Titled
and plated. If I have the history correct, this Jeep and its'
fuel-injected mid-engined brother took home top honors at the
Bakersfield Sand Nationals in the 70's.
