Vehicle Description
The Volvo 140 series was unveiled in 1966 and represented the start
of an entirely new series of passenger cars for the Swedish
manufacturer. It began a new naming convention for future models-
the first digit representing the series, second digit denoting the
number of cylinders, and the third standing for door count. The new
model was no heavier or more expensive than the Amazon which came
before it, but was much more spacious and forgoes the pontoon style
bodywork in favor of the clean, minimalist design that endured well
into the 1990s.
This two-door example of the Volvo 142 was recently acquired from
the original owner who purchased it new from William Jay Clark,
ltd. in August of 1969. The sole option listed on the original
purchase agreement is an AM radio- an $85 option at the time.
Included with the vehicle are a pair of vintage New Jersey license
plates, presumably the original ones issued when the car was
registered. The odometer shows it has traveled fewer than 19,000
miles.
Today, the 142 presents in overall great condition, having aged
gracefully despite being nearly 50 years old. The original Volvo
Dark Green paintwork still has a deep shine while showing some
slight evidence of patina. A single Marchal driving light was
installed on the front bumper, and Volvo mud flaps were installed
at all four corners. The beige cloth seats show little wear and
highlight the interior nicely against grey carpeting and black
fitted all-weather floor mats. Beneath the hood is the B18 1.8L
inline-four cylinder engine with dual carburetors capable of 96
horsepower and mated to a Borg-Warner automatic transmission.
Stylish and easy to maintain- this charming Volvo 142 would be
ideal for anyone who has a soft spot for unusual classics or to
Volvo connoisseurs in search of a late-60s Volvo in original
condition.
