Without question, the 2002 is considered the definitive small
sports sedan. While the diminutive Isetta is thought to have saved
BMW, the 2002 is regarded as the vehicle that defined the company.
The 2002 has its roots in the "New Class" and would become the
first of a long line of BMWs to use a sturdy, imminently tunable,
four-cylinder overhead-cam engine. Demands for increased power had
prompted BMW to introduce the original 2002 in 1968, with
increasing refinements and power output as the years
progressed.
1660826 was built on April 18, 1968, wearing Granada (023) paint
over black leatherette with sunroof, and was delivered April 29,
1968 to the US Market. The BMW made it way to California where it
would receive much cosmetic and mechanical restorative work from
2016-2019. The idea was to freshen this early 02 to a proper
"driver" level for carefree enjoyment and rugged vintage touring.
Much of the car's recent work was performed by marque specialists
2002 AD of Pomona, California. Records on file include attention to
suspension, steering, and brake systems, fluids, filters, ignition,
carburetor and cooling system, rubbers, seals, tires (x5), sunroof,
brightwork, upholstery and paint.
The car appears to retain original body and floor, although the
floors have been patched / repaired in several areas (pictured).
All side and rear glass are etched Duro-glas, along with an
original Sigla windshield. Its cabin displays recent basket weave
leatherette upholstery, padding, headliner and carpet - while its
sunroof operates smoothly. Current mileage reads 52,300. The
luggage compartment is fitted with new grey flooring, over the
stowed spar tire, jack and tire iron. Ideal for immediate driven
enjoyment and / or continued rolling refurbishment, 1660826 offers
early 2002 desirably and pure "New Class" design. Now available for
worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas
showroom.
